Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Tman, Dec 31, 2010.

  1. Shoot me his info! I think we will start our breakfasts thsi week? Stay in touch with me. Can you measure the ID and width of those VW hoops?

  2. We have a number! Just got off the phone with Chuck (Harbinger of numbers) , always enjoy his chat. The Spirit of South Dakota will be............................drumroll..............................1876! Thats when the goldrush hit its peak in the Black Hills and Deadwood. Very fitting for me since my great grandpa also drove the Deadwood Stage during those times. I was going for the statehood date of 1889 but it is in use. Besides, who has not seen Deadwood on HBO?

I also got the shoulder hoop bent tonight. No pics, Carla took the camera on her trip back East. things are going well.

Dear fellow 1876er: Good progress on the racer! Keep that momentum going and the record is yours!

I've been screwing off in Bakersfield, myself. Had too much fun and am extra crispy... but I'm back. Let's finish this thing up and fry salt!

  10. Scotty, the coqpit is sized for fellows like you me and my brother. Gotta cope some uprights and get working on a helmet hoop plan.

  11. Started on the uprights and diagonals last night in between trick or treaters. Using the coping method in this thread.

I found I can do a tube in less than five minutes with very little effort. Got the first couple tubes ready and starting laying the rest out with masking tape and tape measure. If this thing gets upside down I want the strongest, best layed out cage/frame I can build!

  12. Been working on my miters, real easy, holesaws suck. This is bandsaw and hand file.

Helmet bars. bent to perfection from my pal Randy at R&D Chassis!

Stinkbug in a 32 by Carla, she snapped this thing last night candid.

  13. Looks good! The tubbing not the bug.

  14. Looks like 11"

    I would say 10"

    Maybe 9-ish

    Cheers!

  15. Thanks Tim! I forgot to ask Orv if I could borrow his Simpson Bandit tonight to use for fitting the helmet hoops. Lil brother will be out tomorrow as the crash test dummy as we bend up the rest of the cage! We will use my older, smaller lid and adjust according to your new helmet.

  16. Working on driver position today. My brother and driver #2 is the test dummy. Measuring and planning. Need to find a home for the two fire bottles, maybe behind the driver?

Just a sugestion, put on a winter jacket to simulate the fire suit. Use the biggest guy in the group for the test dummy. Think about the shifter now. Lookin good so far, I love it!

  18. Been in the car with simulated gear on. Need to add the lower tubes and get closer to the real seating position, right now we are about 2" too high on the plywood.

  19. X2. I thought I had plenty of space in my digger but it sure fills up fast.

You'll be surprised how hard it will become to fit everything needed into that frame.... Don't ask how I know.

I don't think that open helmet will pass tech.
I built a lakester once and my driver modeled the seat etc, with an open helmet.
Once we got his fire suit on and a full face helmet on he could not see the track,he could not tip his head down far enough with the firesuit and helmet on.
It was too late to change the car,so i had to get a new driver.

  26. Oh, I already know. But we have room for all needed. Following the blueprint of a couple existing cars. Whats the status on your tank?

    Really? Read the text.

  27. What? Sometimes I spill... or need to fly :)

  28. Me and lilT do the same. A 4 year old makes you........4 again at times!

Its kinda a long story. The tank is done and ready to be fired up.

Unfortunately I got Pneumonia last year and the infection got outside my lungs. My body went septic and my organs started shutting down. Ventilator, Dialysis etc...I'm one of the lucky 50% that survived when this happens.
At the same time I was in the process of building a new home/shop. Sumpin' had to give. The building went to the front of the list and the bellytank was parked in the back garage. Bonneville just wasn't in the cards.

Well, I'm feeling pretty good now, The building is complete..

Hopefully this year we'll make it to the salt. If not I'm afraid we'll just sell the lakester.
