I just finished stripping off the bearings from the shafts from my 9" Ford. When I pulled the bearing off of one shaft there was a hole under it. It looks like at one time someone broke a chunk out of it trying to change a bearing. Its about 1/4" by 1/4". Should I be concerned?

if it's not terribly deep, i'd run it in a daily driver that was fairly gutless, but if you drive hard or have a heavy/powerful car, then get a new shaft

Might have nicked it with a torch cutting off the old bearing race.
If the car is pounded on it might be a good idea to source a different axle but as a basic driver I wouldn't worry.

Ya well it will be a few more years before it gets back on the road. And it will have only a Y block ( 292 ) with only a 4 barrel so not to powerful.

A lot of guys cut them off with a torch and unfortunately that is what happens. I'm with 69Fury in that if it's a car that isn't driven hard or expected to haul heavy loads or tow loads it will probably pass and be ok but if you do any of the above I'd be thinking about changing it. I've seen guys cut them off with a torch and drive them back on with a piece of pipe before.

Not being in a panic to buy an axle gives you the option of taking a bit of time to find a good axle shaft if it is a standard size shaft.
