It has been a long road but we lit the 22 off today for this first time. The attached video is the first time we tried ton run it. To bad the camera deadens the sound because it sounds great. I also attached the pics of how paint turned out. We out it back to its original colors. Next step is to get the Hisso running and put that back in the car. In the mean time, we will run it the way it is. See you at the track...

Great pics I've not seen before ZigZagZ. The flaming Fronty would probably be in the last race meet at Sheepshead Bay, a 150 miler won by Gaston with Joe Boyer in another Fronty second.

    Yo tambien!
We certainly are blessed with a number of well versed historians who are willing to share and encourage others in their explorations.

There's a lot in the literature covering Miller's two Ira Vail Super sprinters that then developed into the r.e. Gulf-Miller Project.

fwiw; Here's a recent photo of Bill Barringer, son of Gerorge Barringer, whose Gulf Miller burned in the garages at Indy in 1941 and who drove the last remaining Gulf-Miller at Indy in 1946.

    An added note of interest:
Bill contracted with a builder a number of years ago to build a replica of his Dad's 1946 entry but for whatever reason the project ended.
Recently that same builder has renewed work on the car and will be offering it for sale this coming year.

The photo from Sheepshead Bay is a still from a movie "120 Miles per Hour". The image is reversed, as the cars are traveling around the track clockwise. Louie is in the #7 machine, and Ralph Mulford is in the #10 Frontenac. I can't make out the other cars. The film has been spliced, and is presented out of sequence. You can see the footage at the link below:

All of the pictures I have of Sheepshead Bay (as well as the other board tracks and of course the brickyard). show the cars ran counter clockwise. Whether they ran some races clockwise I suppose it is possible although it was not the norm. I am not sure which you are saying is reversed, the still or the newsreel footage. The short clip is cool nevertheless and you will notice the numbers are backwards.-Jim

I don`t know anything about movie film but it sure looks to me like it is the same thing as a flipped negative.

As Jim inferred the numbers on the cars are reversed. The 10 car is 01 in the film.

I have never seen any photos of cars on the boards going clockwise in a race.

The account of Ralph DePalma blowing both front tyres almost simultaneously dueling with Louis Chevrolet has etched a picture in my brain of him approaching the main straight counterclockwise. It's remarkable how the speeds climbed there in 2 years with DePalma and Chevrolet averaging almost 30 mph faster than Resta's 1915 Astor winning speed.

I have a pic in my shop with DePalma at Sheepshead with his left front tire flat and he still appeared to be running hard against Oldfield. Two flat tires would be a whole lot of fun.

These guys had some pretty good stones as I have been in a similar car to DePalma's Packard at Speed (probably as high as 90mph) and with those tires and the wind in your face it gets your attention for sure. Going over 100 with other cars on the slippery board surfaces, all I can say is WOW.

Here are a couple of pics of DePalma and Louis in 1917 at a three way match race that included Oldfield and his Miller motored racers. Oldfield had both his new Sub and new Miller motor in his Delage but had problems getting both cars up to speed. They had a pretty good crowd at Sheepshead to watch the three cars duke it out. DePalma won on that day. Oldfield had some revenge on the dirt though later on that summer. I like the way the guys are cheating the wind.-Jim

So sorry for the confusion. The news reel footage has been flipped, as the numbers on the cars are clearly reversed.

The still is from the movie, but has been flipped back to where it is suposed to be.
