Some more photos from Pomona. I thought they were all taken in '64 but I see some of the photos were taken in '65. Taken in those wonderful days when hooking up meant you met a cute girl in the stands and you're going for a meal later and maybe a home run (usually a strike out). I have more photos to post but my scanner is running so slow I'll wait until tomorrow.

Nye Frank's "Pulsator". Ran 202 the first time out and progressively slower after. Twin injected chevys. The trees and the pump house were still there.

The Isky Dragon again. Loved that modified roadster! Buddies Dennis Moody and Jim Koontz beside it.

Airline Auto. I don't have any details.

Winkle, Trapp and Fuller "Magicar". This was its first outing. It had no front suspension per se. The four frame tubes were welded to the front axle. When the tech inspector wanted to know why there was no suspension Fuller lifted one of the front wheels about 8" off the ground. There was enough flex in the frame to let the front axle move up and down. Can't remember what speed it ran.

My favorite B/F dragster. Jack Chrisman (former Road Runner) and Sachs and Son.

  3. Bill, this was actually Holly Hedrich's roadster. Bud was our local West Covina muffler guy. He did the headers onn this car and quite a few others in the 60's.

Absolute slice of history! Thank You!

  6. That is the second paint job on the Hedrich roadster. When it was first built it was about the same dark red/maroon with yellow flames coming from a big Von Dutch style eyeball on the nose. I saw the car at Fontana in '63 in a match race with the Speed Sport roadster. Speed Sport took the match.

I knew it was the Hedrich roadster. I thought Bud had bought it from him and was racing it under is name.

My all time favorite and as far as I'm concerned the most beautiful dragster ever built. Stellings and Hampshire.

Great pics. I think i'll set my time machine (when it's finished) to that era.

    I'm forwarding this...

"Somebody that is registered at HAMB should tell them that the unknown dragster with the Sierra Gold engine is Frank Cannons Hustler V.
    Don Prieto"

Just great photos of a great era.
    Thanks for putting them up.

  17. My 'ol stomping grounds, Pomona & Fontana. Looking at your pictures brings back a lot of memories. I often wish that I would have thought to take pictures.
Any of you guys remember the hill climbs across from the shut down area? Saw a guy "try" it on a full dressed Harley, needless to say, he didn't make it to the top!

    Thanks for the pics!

Airline Auto Sales was based in Pomona & had several dragsters over the years.
This is probably Mike Danylo's car.

Crossly, Williams, and Swan, Sachs "B Fueler", 2 more cars that went East to Indy that year. First run I kept waiting for Chrisman to make a shift that never came........I'll never forget it!

    More good memories, thanks.

"Ed Pink’s Old Master is seen here in the background at a 1965 Pomona meet. In the foreground is the Starlite III, owned by Chuck Griffith, with a chassis by famed drag racing pioneer, Kent Fuller, and an aluminum body, including a full 'chute pack and lizard nose by Arnie Roberts. Unfortunately, this photo came to us a few days after our deadline for TRJ #52, so it didn’t make it in the article."

Thanks for a shot of the Starlite III, spent a lot of nights working on that car. Don't ya love them 'firesuit' penny loafers that Chuck's wearing? Those were the only shoes I ever remember him wearing while driving.

born in the wrong era. I'm very grateful that I was born in the right era. Just wish I could have had the money to build and race such cars.

firingorder, I can't remember right now but I think he slipped on some 'booties' over the pennyloafers. Notice the tape above his ankles to prevent flame/heat going up the legs?
