Harvey Comics "Adventures in 3D," November 1953, was Harvey's first 3D comic book. Keen cover THANKS to FourColorCraic, a positively engrossing blog by comics enthusiast and historian Pieter Bell of Belfast. OK :D, this is Barney Pollard's space saving solution for his collection of hundreds of cars he saved from destruction. Search his name here on the HAMB for more.

Yellerspirit I would be really interested where you came up with this picture. I am 99%sure it was my grandfathers yard (what we called it).

I have told the story before and will try to keep it short but he placed cars exactly like this hanging off of 80 or 90lb rail and some steel beams to hide them away from prying eyes and in an attempt to preserve his car collection from the WWII scrap drives. Before wondering if he participated in the scrap drives he did. He went out and bought many tons of scrap in an agreement with Washington so he could keep the cars, save for a few he had to give up to the government. At this time he probably had around 600 cars he collected and put them in the buildings to file them away and get them out of sight as well.

When the cars were stood up then he placed metal around the buildings and they stayed like that for many years. It was my playground as a kid in the fifties and sixties. I have some pictures but not many since I could always just go look at the cars.

In the sixties I had to winch some of the cars that had fallen into the contractor supply yard just behind the building and in the sixties brick and block were still along the fence line. Looks pretty much the same as the pic

The broken road material alongside the building was one of my grandfather's business wherein he would grind these large pieces up into smaller pieces and use them for roadbed. We had many large piles like this for many years (although this area in the pic became another building holding many other cars and an airplane etc).

By the way many of the cars you are looking at were preserved and I run into a number of them at many of the car shows I attend. Whatever one may want to think most were saved (but the truth is a number suffered the ravages of hanging over dirt).

I would really like to know if there are any other pictures and if I could use this picture. I have been asked to write an article on this whole episode and this picture is really cool. Anymore pics?-Jim
