I love a stumper, and THIS one stumps me! '38 Stude, but WHAT MODEL? The headlight
pods are the stopper for me. They have an almost Willys look, don't you think?

Probably a "Commander"----Long name on side of hood.

 

Don, still not sure here. I think (doh!) the Commander used pods similar to the '37 Dictator. Could this maybe be a President or a State President model?

The streamlined van in the last pic is a 1935 Morris 15 cwt. Royal Air Mail Service ad-van which was used for publicity shots with the aeroplanes at Croydon airport (I think) the aeroplane is a Handley Page HP45

 

FWIW, I think you are correct that it is a President.

 

Hey guys! Thats a President. The State President had the parking lights on top of the fenders. The Dictator had the 37 headlights.

You two guys are pretty awesome. The thing that caught my attention was that the '37 luxury pickup used the Dictator nose and headlights. It seems the President models were just a stop-gap measure, before the BEAUTIFUL Studes of '39 to '41 !!!

 

I've only seen one more becoming photo of the '40/41 Stude, designed by Loewy
and bodied (I presume) by Budd. Able in every sense, this WELL-TIMED combo
landed, stylewise, right smack between the snappy Mercs of the day and the equally
snappy Fords. This is a Stude press photo, THANKS to fellow HAMBer Dave

I think 1940 was a good year designwise for most makes. Those Studes were really attractive, especially the pickups.I've liked Studebakers since I was a kid in the 50s. My dad bought and sold cars that we would use as a second car and he would get a Stude now and then.We had a 51 for a family car for awhile and my cousin had a 55 for years. A yellow and white 4dr with skirts. When I learned to drive we had one with a hill holder on it. I think Chevy is using the hill holder on their new American built small car. Studebaker and some othe makers were ahead of their times.

Yes the Studes were lookers. When my Dad was drafted (WWll) and shipped to Denver he bought almost the identical car to this pic (his was a two door) . Dad's pic of course was in B&W but I think the color was more or less chocolate with beige ish accent strip. They drove that car all over the West and finally sold it in San Francisco in 47 or 8.

That was one of the smartest cars Dad ever owned.

That was Jim Clark, the only non-American racer in the 63 Indy 500.

.....1963 Lotus-Ford with Colin Chapman and Jim Clark

Jim Clark finished 2nd behind Parnelli Jones Offy Roadster in 1963 Indy 500.
Jim had closed to 6 seconds behind Parnelli,but Jones oil tank cracked and
was leaking oil causing several cars to spin and Jim got sideways too but
recovered.He said i decided it was better to be 2nd than dead,so he slowed
and finished 33 seconds behind in 2nd place.

1963 Indy,Dan Gurney's Lotus 29,Ford push-rod V-8

Dan was running 3rd close to the end of the 1963 Indy 500,but had to
pit to tighten a loose wheel nut and finished 7th.

Mickey Thompson's Chevy powered car is on the left,used 12 inch wheels with Sears
Allstate tires and inboard mounted brakes,finished 8th.A.J.Watson's Offy roadster is in the
center,was tried and true from years of development.Colin Chapman's Lotus-Ford is on the
right,used an aluminum version of Ford's 260-289 push-rod V-8 and finished 2nd with
Jim Clark and 7th with Dan Gurney.

rear hub broke

Mario received burns on his face from the fire from this accident.

Is amazing how low Mickey Thompson's car was!. Lower than the Lotus. Is there a side or rear view of it?.
