There are a lot of cars that I would love to see in TRJ that has been mentioned on here. As for the hot rod and custom part.. I don't see anything wrong with what they do. Dragsters are a huge part of hot rodding history as is land speed racing, indoor car shows, backyard built hot rods, etc. They may not put an even amount of each in a single issue, but they balance it out within several issues. I don't mind the custom-heavy issues or the dragsters-heavy issues because they do hot rod-heavy issues as well. I dig the customs just as much as I do the hot rods. They mix it up. You don't know what to expect in the next issue. Well, at least not until Ryan goes and tells us. All in all, I don't see anything wrong with TRJ at all. It's my favorite magazine out of all the ones I get and that won't change for a long time, if not ever.
Glad to hear Dick is still active... he took me for a ride in Bob's roadster... never saw his roadster but many of the mods were the same... just no HEMI... I bet he is still driving the 32 Tudor... I searched the net for pic's to post and they are almost nonexistant... I was amazed at the cars Ford looked at before selecting Dick's to represent hot rodding... several were in the top 75
Here are the pictures I found... the guy from Ford said Dick picked him up at the Airport in the roadster... not many cars built in 54 have held up that well without having anything redone... I also heard that he didn't run a fan due to space and drove it to the L.A. Roadster Show from Phx
It's good to hear that TRJ doesn't feature the best of rides, because I was about to drop $750 of hard earned minimum wage to buy the super deluxe packet or whatever it is which includes the mags 10-60, 75 dueces, the showcar book and show feature book, and some other stuff. Funny thing, the only book I want out of all of those is the showcar one, but to get just the book in the edition that I want it (the one that includes a feature on all the major shows, not just one) costs either $350 or $450. I mean, in an hour sense thats, 63 hours not including taxes and what not. I am looking at close to 80 hours, and what would I do if I didn't like the book? I know I like the HAMB, and it is free even though I am thinking about getting a membership next year (only a month away) so...
Rikster, No disrespect meant, but why was that a good laugh? You guys are talking about changing something that I love as is (and have purchased from day one) by adding or increasing the only articles I don't read. I'm sorry if you dissagree, but I can have my opinions too. I truly wish that someone would come up with an all custom book so that every body would be happy. Then I wouldn't have to feel cheated ten or twenty pages a quarter.
No body said we are going to change anything. I started this post cause i have seen the lack of custom cars in the magazine, but i also said for people to post what they would like featured in it. That meaning it coud be customs, hot rods, street rods, or write up on what ever. For you to feel cheated ten or twenty pages a quarter? WOW REALLY? In what way do you feel cheated? There is an all custom car magazine. Its call Kustom Illustrated. I have all the issue to this magazine too. It is getting better with every issue and i think its starting to get better then TRJ on the custom car side. They have been doing article on custom cars from back in the day to today. They also did a 3 issue spread on the THEN AND NOW build at last years GNRS show. So back to the original thing here. What are the cars that you would like to see featured or any thing that would make good reading. Thanks to everyone who has posted. even if its about how well they are doing and dont change a thing. Im sure the guys at TRJ dont give a crap at what we think or would like , but its fun to discuss the things we do.
Right, but the whole thread has its own agenda behind the original question. It started to be shown around this post: Hell, I'd definitely suggest that the Kaiser should be included, but that's not what the OP wants obviously. People seem have a narrow view of what's ok to be in and what's not ok. That's the problem here, what started as a simple "What cars deserve to have a feature?" really meant, "What cars are or are not worthy of being anywhere near this magazine?" That's not quite saying the same thing.
I think this thing would be a great article for the mag: Great story and great car. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=371150 Honestly, another thing I'd like to do is become copy editor of the mag...I always want to fix the little grammar mishaps I see while reading it. Maybe that's just me. Love the mag though.
Holy cow, Rik- you nailed it. I completely agree. As a side note (and my own opinion), the Gypsy Rose is a great lowrider with history...and I have met the owner and he's a cool guy, but it is just that- a lowrider. Not "Rodder's Journal" material to me...but a lot of people seem to blur that line
X2 on Bull's Model A sedan. That thing is gorgeous and deserves this kind of recognition. iPhone - TJJ App
Much like the good ol' Rod & Custom logo. About 2/3's ROD to 1/3 CUSTOM. I believe that is what is known as the golden ratio. hehe
Okay, I'll answer your question, make an observation or two, then I'm out on this one, 'cause I don't want to risk my views upsetting people I respect a great deal. I feel "cheated" because custom content is not stuff I pay attention to. I reviewed # 52 today, and after having it in my home for two months today, I never noticed the article on Darryl Starbird. Why? 'Cause it's just flat stuff I don't care about. I respect the man and his work, and would never belittle him, but it's just not my taste. So that is my chunk for this month that I just got no use from for the 14.95 I shelled out. Not much, I know, but times are tight and I sometimes have to think about a fifteen dollar purchase, (never thought I would hear myself say that!) and that is part of that purchase price I can't get back. Now, even the slightly poorer me can justify that, no big deal. But if that 10 or 12 pages turns into 38 to 50 out of 160, then I have to rethink my money. Probably would still buy it though, I have since issue number one. I am however at a crossroads with Rod&Custom at the moment over the same issue. How I spend my money for what I read is within my rights to control. That's the last I have to say on this subject. Observation BICKFORD, I went back to your original nominations for cars to feature within TRJ, and was surprised to see Jon Fisher's '36 on the list. Are you not aware that they did a super cool 4 page feature on that car complete with a neat fifties style Eric Rickman photo shoot in issue ten? Might check that one out. So far I have seconded a couple of cars for inclusion in the pages, and I would have to third Bull's sedan as well. I'd love to see more of this car. Another historic car that I would love to see up close and personal in a TRJ style shoot would be Jake's old Niekamp car, the first Oakland winner. Show me even more detail than the old ROD&CUSTOM and subsequent quarterlies did forty years ago and I'd be toe dancin'. Oddly, this is probably my all time favorite car, yet it's about the only historic roadster I have never seen in the flesh. You could add the Bill Vinther built former Mark Westrick orange '32 hiboy into my short list of stuff I'd love to see in TRJ. I appologize to the current local owner for not remembering his name, but everytime I see the car it stops me in my tracks. Not evrybody knows it, so I'll drop a shot from this last weekend of it at the pages bottom. Ntaphase's Kiaser is going to get my vote as well, because it's stunning. I don't care what is under the car, it's flat bitchin'. My last observation is this, I promise not to start a thread telling Kustoms Illustrated that they need to start featuring traditional hot rods if they want my business. I have the first couple of issues, I know what it's about and haven't bought more. To each his own.
They could omit '32's for a solid year. But the idea of a sister rag 'The Custom Journal' would be killer. If your comments are a request, that seems reasonable. But to flip a bitch on this magazine is bit much.
First, thanks for the support on my car. I know you are trying to see your way out of this conversation, but I just wanted to make a point about what you said. Even if you ONLY get 100 pages of TRJ that you like, you are still coming out ahead of any other magazine. Seriously, I can't think of another publication that has 100 pages of quality. Also, if I had every issue since #1, that would be motivation enough for me to keep the collection going. Have you checked prices on complete collections lately? It's an honest to God investment. If you bought #4 at face value (I know it's the exception) the value has increased at least tenfold. Lastly, I would like to thank the supporters for voting my car into the pages of TRJ...a week after Coonan shot it. Sorry couldn't resist.
I respect your point as I hope others will as well and I don't think anyone would fault you or be upset by what you have to say. You have an opinion and you put it forward in a calm well thought out manner. The problem I have with you statement is trying to compare TRJ or Rod & Custom to something like Kustoms Illustrated. Kustoms Illustrated doesn't advertise itself as a hot rod and customs car magazine. It is a custom car magazine period. Both TRJ and Rod & Custom do. That means they are catering to both groups so if one of the groups feels under represented starting a post to try and rally more support is not even comparable to you starting one asking Kustoms Illustrated to cover hot rods. Look at it this way you feel slighted by the 10 to 12 pages (even though I do think it is more)an issue of TRJ devoted to customs that you spent $14.95 for. How do you think a custom car fan feels when 150 of those pages are devoted to stuff they are not interested in. I consider myself lucky in that I like both and love the vast majority of what is every issue. To get back on point I would love to have seen a bare metal feature on the fleetline that Bass put together.
Your car is bad ass to the bone. Don't worry about the naysayers. In fact, go and look at some of their profiles and see what iron they have in their stable or what accomplishments they have made in the automotive world. Anyone that cannot appreciate the work that has gone into that car is just flat being closed minded. It is certainly a damn sight better than any belly button 32 Ford. History or no history, they all tend to look alike.
Absolutely! I really don't want to ever have to stop purchasing TRJ, nor do I intend to. I bought 1,2, and 3 from Steve Coonan himself off of a card table at Pleasenton in the early or mid nineties sight unseen, and suscribed too. Had very few regrets as far as content over the years as well. But if the content ever does go away from the stuff I enjoy, I'd have to review that as well. That will just be life, and I know it doesn't revolve around me. But, if you don't speak up and make your opinions heard, you have no say in the final out come. Ntaphase, you are one of the people I don't want to insult. You have created a stunning car, and very well earned your shoot for the mag. Your car is a very intreguing custom for me BECAUSE of the work you have done to not only restyle the car, but to update it so that it is a functional vehicle in todays world. The vast panecea of the over chopped, skirted, torched springs and lowering blocked mid fifties fourdoor is what turns me off to the whole custom thing. Even the revered Merc gets to looking the same after the 978th that you've seen with exactly the same chop. I could never see myself wound tight running down the right lane of I-17 at ten miles an hour under the speed limit 'cause I just spent my bucks overchopping the top and painting instead of updating a trans. I would much rather spend my time building an engine and drivetrain that goes faster, or a suspension system that handles better. Two flips of a different coin I guess.
TRJ # 52 photo count (not counting ads) Total photos 142 Total photos of customs 34 of 27 different custom cars Featured 49 chevy custom Darryl Starbird Not enough customs ?
No disrespect to Mr. Starbird, but not the type of customs I want to see. Holds about as much of my attention as a highboy on big balloon tires & ugly mag wheels.
I want to thanks everyone who has posted on this thread. Yes i have ranted about certain cars. There are gonna be cars i dont like or are not into at all, but i will look at them and appreciate the work that went into them. I really like this cause its an open forum for who ever wants to say whats on the minds about the subject. Hopefully we can keep this going and have fun with it. Even if its to rant or show your excitement about any cars out there.
Agree, agree! The Bass coupe and farmer12's awesome Plymouth in one edition. Should sell out in no time!
After seeing the email from TRJ yesterday of what to expect in the next issue, I think it's safe to say there's a healthy mix of hot rods and customs. There's a couple more features of hot rods than customs in this issue but they do cover the GNRS Customs Then and Now exhibition so there'll be plenty of kustom eye candy for everybody here. I'm looking toward the feature on the two deuce roadsters (Steve Ernst's Texas Playboy built by Brian Bass and Floyd Williams' deuce built by Dave Lane's Fastlane Rod Shop).
That's why I suggested RJ do a feature... there are very few pictures except in the museum setting and the roadster was picked when the Doane Spencer and McGee - Scritchfield roadsters were available at the time (I saw the photos in the album that the Ford curator took of the cars that were considered)... but, Dicks was had not been modified since its initial 1954 build and was still in service at the time
