Actually both "ghosts" are the same guy, you see the spokes because he moved sideways halfway through the exposure.

Not picking nits here, but it was '65. NASCAR had banned the Hemi that season.

I think the ban was lifted sometime in 65 and they raced them into the 70 season.

Yup. After Richard dominated in 64 and won his first of seven championships while running the hemi that year, Nascar banned the engine for 65'. So Petty still had a contract to fulfill, so the 43 Jr was born which was a 65 Barracuda. He raced for almost half a year when he went to Dallas Ga (not to far from here) where he lost control of his car, plowed into the crowd and killed a small boy. After that, he just got out of it period. (He still don't like to talk about it in interviews) About 8 months after that, Nascar called and told him the changed the rules and they would allow a hemi, but just with not as much hp. He went out in 66' and won the Daytona 500 and several races but lost the points to David Pearson who was drving the Cotton Owens Dodge.

Now the Superbird Story....In late 1968, After Petty found out that Dodge was going to run a winged car, he wanted one for his Plymouth. After he found out that Plymouth wasn't building one, he decided to leave and go 'across the street' to Ford. They gave him a Talladega Torino and he won the first race out against the winged cars in Riverside California. Around the summer of 69' a rep of Plymouth drove up to Petty's shop in Randleman and talked. No lawyers, no press, no family say-so, just two men dealing. It was simple, all Richard wanted was to have a winged Plymouth for 1970 and he'd come back to his loyal manufacturer. The deal was made and he came back to the familar Mopar product for the 1970 season. His other car, Pete Hamilton won the Daytona 500 that year while Richard had mechanical failure just 8 laps in. Anyway, Richard had good success with the Superbird, but lost the championship to K&K Insurance Team Car driven by Bobby Issac who was in a Daytona car.

    Maybe this will help.

No they don't :( You need to save the images to Photobucket or Fotki or Flicker. Then
you need to click on the yellow icon with the mountain and paste the URL there.
The URL will be surrounded by..[IMG]

OK..these show up here..I posted them from my photobucket without using the image thing. As it already had the IMG tags...

Are these actually showing up..if they are..first one was taken around the 1920's near Hawtry, Ontario. Second one was around the turn of the 20th century..Norwich, Ontario.

Yes, triumph1 thats how it's done.

  16. That's pretty-much what I'd heard, you added a lot of the details, and thanks.

But - then in '71 the winged MOPARs went away, correct? And wasn't it because NASCAR mandated that - if a wing, engine cid was 350 or less (no BBs) must run. But if no wing, hemi's and 440s were good to go? Again, the details escape me.

Ah, Dawsonville! (sorry to digress here but - Does the Poolroom still exist? Didn't they used 'ring the bell' every time Bill won a race? Haven't been down there in many years. Wondering if the tradition will continue. I heard his son Chase won the Snowball Derby.

Your right on the Petty stuff.

And yes, the Dawsonville Pool Room has had the same owner for about 45 years. It had what the owner calls a "Sireen", a former state patrol siren for Bill's. Used to go off every time he won a pole or race. And now Gordon (owner) had one installed for Chase. You should see the looks of out-of-towners when it goes off. They get scared and think a tornado is going off or something.:D

Then we have the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame right down the street from there (1/4 mile) I volunteer there as a tour guide and historian. I do anything that needs to be done. (I'm 15) And Gordon Pirkle, who owns the Pool Room is our CEO. We've got over 30 cars and lots of new exhibits and displays of cars ranging from a 1937 Ga State Patrol Car to Chase Elliott's Rockingham race winner car from last year. Lots to see. georgiaracinghof.com or find us on facebook. Sorry for the plug and advertisement:eek:

The driver was very lucky! A slower moving hit like this usually has the car rolling sideways along the track in front of the train until it looks like a can of Spam hit with a 5 pound hammer

RP dug a hole and buried the wrecked 43jr behind his shop. I saw pix ( I think they were here on the HAMB ) of the car being dug up when RP Enterprises was adding onto the shop. You could still read Plymouth on the rear 1/4.
