Well, this thread is NOT helping with my desire to build one. Loving all the pics and info. Think I'm going to order some prints to go over. I can weld and fabricate but can you mig one of these chassis together and pass tech or do you have to tig it these days?

If you build a mild steel car MIG is OK but TIG is mandatory with a 4130 CM frame.

Thanks Rooman, if I build one it will be mild steel, can't afford to mess up using 4130, plus I can weld extremely well with a MIG, been a long time since I used TIG for anything and don't have access to one anymore. Finishing up my 65 F100, well at least good enough to cruise and tow with, then I will be getting started on the FED.

Since a mild steel car will be heavier (up to twice as much) than a cm chassis I'd keep the wheel base under 170", and use a torsion, or buggy spring suspension on the front axle. Plus build it with a 5 point roll cage so the tech inspectors at the track(s) won't give you any grief (most tracks will turn you away with a 3 point roll cage, even if you keep the car running slower than 10 seconds in the 1/4).

I know the weight will be a factor with mild steel, but my intention is to build something similar to a dragmaster in length and looks. If it goes anywhere near 10.0 in the 1/4 that is quick enough for me to get my feet wet with an FED, only been down the track in S10's running in the 12's for the most part. Not sure yet what the front axle setup will be. Still in the planning and researching stage right now. Thanks for the help guys.

Got a question that I hope some of you guys can answer. I've attached some photos of a dragster that my uncle ran in the 66/67 timeframe and I'm curious to see if any of you can ID the chassis manufacturer. I asked him once upon a time if he'd built it himself and he said that he'd purchased the bare chassis from a company out on the west coast, but I can't for the life of me remember who it was. He said that it came with the bodywork and a front axle but nothing else. Any ideas?

Looks like a Kellison to me, they did a frame/body package back in the day. I will look through my 60's magazines and try to find one of their ads.

If you look real closely at the bottom left pix at the front end(enlarging the pix) you will see the front axle level with the torsion bar tube and the arms curved--- standard Kellison way of building their front ends plus the all 'glass body.

I know this isn't a dragster chassis but you guys always amaze me on what you know, this is a chassis i got with a funny car I'm restoreing ,i have to update it and at the same time try to make it look close to the orignal ,but I also don't want to butcher up a piece of history,i can always get another chassis, ,a buddy of mine thought it might be a Palamides chassis by the axle out in front of the main frame work ,it's 118 inch wheelbase any thoughts/ Tim Jones

    Thanks Roo,

I'm about 99% certain that's what he told me. If you happen to run across one of their ads I'd love to see a copy!

There is a thread here titled "Hundley & Boggs AA/FD recreation". It is a copy of Kellison FED car that was originally raced out of West Viginia. It was built by J.Ed Horton at Horton Race Cars in Belton, SC. There are some pictures from the NHHR and the CHHR. The car is owned by Marty Harrison(fuel55 here on the HAMB). Some Kellison ads were in a post by
HAMB'er Johnnyfast a couple of years ago.

Been reading this great thread, over here in England you have more luck finding a pot of gold than finding an old dragster chassis lying in someones back yard, however we have a few good chassis builders, visited a mate in Somerset who is building a replica Dragmaster for a customer. Am a bit of a computer "numpty" so not 100% sure how to copy pics but visit his site on zannetec.com will look awsome once finished.

    Hello Guys:)

Can anyone help us identify this FED frame?
As you might see, the rear axel housing is what hold the frame together.
There are some of the same solutions as the Dragmaster frames?
Upper tube has the same size from back all the way to the front end torsion tube:confused:!
We would be glad to know approx this was build, and by who?
We like to know tis before making the chassis mods.

    Thanks

    Br
    Kjell

Sorry that you can't see much of the chassis now but here is Ernie Broughton's Commanche re-pop just before I put it in the trailer to deliver it. Look for it in paint at the NHRR at Bowling Green in a couple of weeks.

Just yesterday, Ross Blasingame and I were talking about the Freedom Machine car. Then Ross started telling me all about the car that Rooman did the body on posted above. That body looks beautiful. Nice job.

Great work Rooman , if you put these cars side by side it would be tough to tell what one was built in the 60's, Tim Jones

They are so old that if Ernie does a burnout with them there most likely will be more sparks than smoke (G)
