what kind of water are you using? straight from the tap? I go to the drug store and get the distilled water to stay away from this

Go to your local airport and see if you can find some homebuilders, ask if they can Alodine those for you.

Make sure to bake them when they are done to get the hydrogen out (325 f for 2 or 3 hours should do it).

Don't bake them in an oven you intend to cook food in.

Should end up a gold color, resist corrosion better and hold paint, if you want to paint it.

Sand it clean first, or scotch brite (or equivalent non metallic pot scrubber).

What the hell is that? How does it come to be? Why am I the only one asking these questions?

  20. Has already etched about 1/16 out of the aluminum

  21. Thats why I dont drink the water in Roseville. Its down stream from Colfax...

  22. Thanks Tim I needed that......................

  23. First possible prevention is to use a liquid sacrificial anode additive by my best guess. Wix has it in a plastic bottle and it's known to some folks as DAC from another manufacurer. May help, may not.
Other than that, whatever that crap is is something that will never be a good food or fuel additive. Don't try to fertilize a plant with it either.

That's bizarre ! We've started adding water pump lubricant and rust inhibitor to the 50/50 mix of distilled water and antifreeze. Last time we pulled the engine apart it was as clean as a whistle inside the cooling passages. We won't fill up another radiator without some in there.

+2 on that one, pretty funny

  27. I know you don't have a cooling system but I run soluable oil in my water and don't see anything like this.

  28. Black+aluminum = acid. Something in the water, Carl... THe anode idea should fix it.

I could just imagine what it would be if you were running an aluminum radiator.
    WOW! Now I got questions....
