I went to a speed shop to buy water wetter. They asked if my radiator was aluminum. I said yes, they said the water wetter will eat aluminum, Purple Ice was a better choice.

After reading all this, it's got me worried. I'm running Redline water wetter with aluminum heads and radiator. Should I be concerned?

Sacrificail anode is the answer for this deal. I once had some one much smarter than my self explain to me why distilled water does this when exposed to aluminum, but half way though the explanation he used the word "atoms" or "electrons" and my eyes glazed over. Suffice to say, I had the same problem with my aluminum heads and radiator in the Plymouth a few years back after religious use of distilled water. (Hell, we don't even DRINK Phoenix city water, after all, you know what fish do in it!!! Not to mention the crunch from the minerals...)

Iron block+Aluminum plate=Corrosion. Aluminum becomes the anode. The "Water Wetter" apparently makes the water a better "electrolyte". If you could hook a voltmeter to the block and plates you are probably making electricity. Don't sweat the details Carl, you have a "Green" dragster. :D

As a possible solution if you have the aluminum plates powder coated it will insulate them, but you still have aluminum heads so the best solution is find a non-acidic coolant or fill the block and run the thing dry.

I know people freak out that we don't run water but we have never had a problem. Gas and alcohol.

My dad has run that engine from 75' with no water. And it still runs strong today.

(you just have to have longer turn arounds or my favorite.. Hose the engine down!!!)

Plus your options for blocks open up tremendously when you don't run water!!!

But I don't know what you got going on over there Carl... Weird stuff is a brewing.. Hope you figure it out. I don't like finding that kind of stuff in engines!

"Anodize; To subject a metal to electrolytic action, as the anode of a cell, in order to coat with a protective or decorative film."

Anodizing is the gold colored electricly adheared coating that discourages aluminum from corosion. Mainly used in petrolium industry, and the aviation industry. Worked for machine shop that did both, and most (if not all) of the parts were finished this way.:)

  12. Now you guys want me to have parts all over the track huh?

I will have to slowly work up to the "juice"...............

looks like sac anode will be put into this engine........
as I have ideas on kooling between rounds..........

If you want to cool between rounds you could always set up a small A/C unit and blow cold air through the block. :D

  15. doin something similar, a heat exchanger made out of an old coleman cooler and a coil of copper with a 12v bilge pump ..........

For those who are mentioning using distilled water, be careful. Pure water (which is what you have if you have true distilled water) is a very aggressive solvent because it can readily absorb things. Example, distilled water can easily absorb carbon dioxide and forms carbonic acid. It will essentially dissolve any metal (especially soft ones like aluminum and copper, hey, components in some engines and radiators!) and form acids. So, distilled water is not the best idea for a cooling system. If your tap water is overly hard, like many areas of the southwest, use water from a softener, if hard water build up is a concern, it can clog up an engine just like your house pipes only faster because of the heat.

    That is correct!

I bought some Alodine 1201 "chemical coating for aluminum" from Henkel industries to coat the cases on my Triumph motorcycle project. Worked great and I did not have to put it in the oven after as stated above. Just had to wash them a couple times after to stop the reaction. I suppose the oven would help with coating them just like re-blueing a firearm.

I think I paid 30 bucks or so for a quart, and it goes a long way!

  29. try putting a small piece of zinc in the block. it will become the sacrificial anode.
