I made it through every page of this fantastic thread! Thanks to Dog- who started it all and thanks to all who posted these amazing glimpses back to a time when life was...well, FAR different from today. Better or worse? I'll leave that up to those who have been around long enough to make that call...
I have "right click-save"-ed some of my favorites so I can look back on a slide show of them and get lost in those times- if even for a brief moment before the reality of big box stores and plastic bumpers rears its ugly head again. I will be looking through old family albums over the holidays for some appropriate pics to scan and post...

What is with that center line? I thought that was only done in the Looney Tunes cartoons.

  11. spruce goose .... I went through it at long beach ... whadda trip!

That squiggely line denoted "school zone" ... this was on top of the regular signage ... in the 50s.

EDIT ... and Jane Russel (another one of Howard Hughes projects! LOL) had a damn nice rack!

The Spruce Goose is now in Oregon, in the Evergreen museum. I left DNA in it.

  14. I was at a Company Party that was held under the wings of the Spruce Goose when it was in Long Beach. Hard to imagine how BIG it is until you are next to it.

Those were 1942 Chevy's---War time issue.
Rationing started in 1942---We had ration books & "A" stickers on windshield for gas---Farmers had "F" stickers.---Gov't also had non metal "Tax tokens", if I remember right, it took 10 tokens to equal 1 cent.
Since sugar was rationed, I always ate my cold cereal with Karo syrup.
Butter was also rationed, & we popped a small red dot in a package (plastic) & squished it around to mix with white margarine for color.
Red meat being rationed also, made us eat lots of white rabbit & chicken parts.
BUT, being good loyal Americans, we all survived so our fighting forces could enjoy a good meal wherever they were until VE & VJ day arrived!

I was lucky enough to watch ol' HOWIE' take off & fly this plywood wonder 15 ft. off the water at Long Beach,Ca. in 1947.
Only then would the US Gov't reimburse Hughs once he proved it would fly.

I had the same pleasure at a large scale model train convention there one evening awhile back. We got the Goose tour plus there were some stock old flathead Fords on display adjacent to the plane and there were about 10 yards of running deserts on tables under the wing. And fireworks later just alongside the Queen Mary. You'd think that, with a town the size of LA, the museum would have never run out of visitors, eh? Gary
