  3. glad to see this thread come back , i wonder how many of these old dragstrip warriors have been fully restored to bloomington gold level?

if i found an old drag car with proven heritage id have to leave it as a as raced drag car even if it was a very rare one of one car

I have played with tire size and wheel combos a bit. Right now I am running 15 x 7" Cragars with a standard offset on a 62. I have some Hurst pie crust slicks that are 8" wide and 28" tall. I have another set of radials that are the same size and it would be hard to go any taller and/or wider without running into problems. Both sets have approximately 3/8" clearance to the outside edge of the leaf spring. I have tried some 7" Chevrolet ralley wheels and they fit OK and 8" ralley wheels rub on my springs. As to tire height the problem is with the dog leg (just forward of the tire towards the door). With my 28" tall tires I have 1 1/4" clearance to the dog leg. If you were to go any taller and for any reason get any tire shake you would be right into the dog leg. My car is not stock height but I have owned the car for 30 some years and run a number of combinations and even at stock height the spring and the dog leg were the two areas moreso than the area over the tire, as the tires still fit inside of the wheelwell, just barely). There may be some differences on the 58-60 models but I believe the dog leg and spring clearance issues would be pretty much the same.

If there was an easy way to go bigger and taller I would.

Some great pics added to the thread recently. Here are a couple of cars that were at a local Vette show recently. The 53 with the Pontiac was built back in the day and the original owner and new owner came to the show together. Sounded really good. I really liked the car. The black 59 is still owned by the original owner and it is pretty cool as well. It was really refreshing to go to a Vette show and be among other modified Vettes. There was also a really cool 61 with a big block. Its nose is just visible behind the black 59.-Jim

In Lowcat's post 365 does anyone know what the dual headlight car is in the first picture? I don't think I've ever seen it before. The Buick LaSabre is the third one.

Doug I kind of wondered about that car as well. If I had to guess I would say it is a Harley Earl creation but even though the windshield looks like it is Corvette the rest does not really look like it is Corvette based (if you look at the interior shape). With the other 2 cars being around in 1956 I kind of wonder on this car as to whether it is 1956 based.

In 1958 Bill Mitchell I believe had the XP700 built which had a somewhat similar front shape and a 61/61 tail and now I almost think that Mitchell just cleaned up this car, whatever it is and came up with the XP700. Below is the XP700-Jim

Thanks Jim. Guess it's time to dig out The Stars Spangled Sports Car and go to looking. It definately looks like something Harley would have built.

Thanks for starting this thread Brian, me and my dad just spent the last hour or so drooling.. I hope to scan some of his old Vette pics and post them up soon.. We are looking for a pre-68 project if anybody has one for sale.. I'm willing to trade my 64 F-100 and my 31 5 window for the right one..... SERIOUSLY! Ryan

Any WA. state guys have pictures of a mid 60s Vette called the Northwest Knight  Black with flames, front straight axle. Ran by a couple of brothers out of Arlington WA. Bought the ET IIIs off this car for $25 in the 80s when it was being pro streeted, ouch! Car was later painted red and called the Glass Rat, sold again and have not seen it in years. Sold those wheels for $350 shortly after buying, man I wish I still had em.

    Merry Christmas to all,

    John

And to think that probably a good portion of these are now sold as matching nunbers cars with all the right parts and that rare color for thar year. After spending years outside or in an old barn. I love em.

Aftermarket, came with the car when I bought it. Yes, I know it looks stupid. I bought a stock one from Joe Calcagno some years ago but no pics.

Triggerman, i have posted pics of my 62 with the pie crust slick I refer to. This is about as tall as you can go without getting in trouble with the dogleg. The first pic is before raising the front to be level with the rear height and the second pic is right after I raised the front to be level with the rear height. I had Eaton spring re-arc the rear springs to get the ride height I liked. I made my own three inch blocks to go in front between the frame and front sub assembly.

I like your car. If they are modified I am always interested. Stock not really quite as much. I would like to see more pics of the car. What's the induction?

I had one of those tops. I had a guy tell me for years he had a 62 top he would ship me and then he shipped me a top just like that. I never used it but gave it to a neighbor when I lived in SoCal. Don't know what he ever did with it. They are a bit different and I remember them from years ago. I kind of wished I kept the one I gave away. -Jim

Jim, you will like my friend 56NoBrakes' '56 Corvette. He runs 50 year old (yes, that was not a typo) Firestone Gum Dipped pie crusts in the back and 'stones in the front all on genuine magnesium Americans. Torq Thursts in the back, LeMans on the front. I include a pic or two. Naturally the rears don't clear shit  and the only way it stops rubbing on the quarter panel lip is with air shocks. This car is seriously old school.

With regard to my hot rod, the top is really poor quality. It has no interior/headliner and no method to attach to the windshield frame. I came attached with solid core electrical wire strung around a metal bracket riveted to the top and wrapped around my steering column and the passenger side chicken bar. It was a race car and the lighter the better I suppose. Send me an email thru the HAMB or a PM and I'll shoot you more pics.

The induction is by Hilborn and it's my avatar.

That looks like an old Parrish Hardtop.
( Now sold as Smooth Line )

I had one a while ago that I sold to a Vette restorer/owner.
