Soviet AA Gazes, shot an destroyed with division of soldiers on a countryroad of Suomussalmi Finland. Finns used successfully clever motti tactic against overwhelming red army in the winter war 1939-1940.
Most of those Gazes were restored next summer and got shot again later on

 

Thanks for the insight, Ed. Sounds VERY much like the shift from tin-plates to wet-glass negs happened around the civil war. Brady was, obviously, the most famous, and he was using glass plates. But I'd bet money there were still photogs in the field using the tin-type you describe. I do wish there'd been more photographers on the Confederate side of the line, as the visual record is fairly sparse.

I just thank God that REAL phtography came on in the 1840s and '50s. As much as I love the artists' talents, some photos surely help flesh out any historical situation.

In '39, the path to widespread war was starting to accelerate fast, and a lot of folks today, worldwide, know about Poland in '39 but don't know how the Hitler/Stalin double-cross (secret deal) affected other countries, especially in the region of Scandanavia and the Baltic Sea.

If you have any more background on the situation in the two photos, I (for one) would be keenly interested. Thanks again.
