    Description

"Sitting behind the Portland Company foundry, this Caterpillar "60" has a 10-ton Sargent snowplow with side wing plows on each side. Here we can see how extensive the pulley system is to raise the plows."--Fletcher, David H. 'The Portland Company 1846-1982.' Charleston, S.C. : Arcadia Pub., 2002. 113

  7. Used to see these things lined up at the Santa Barbara airport when I was a kid. Thought they were the neatest thing.

MM has been a FREQUENT subject on this HAMB thread, but 99 percent of material has concentrated on her life after stardom hit. Anyone who finds her fascinating really should read about her birth and early life, before stardom. You'll probably be very surprised by the sadness of her as a "nobody's child." (Her birth name was, in fact, Mortenson.) One can't view many of her movies without catching the unmistakable vulnerability; reading her whole story lends depth of appreciation, IMO.

12-year-old Norma in 1938, seated in front of Ana "Aunt Ana" Lower, one of Norma's
numerous foster mothers. The time spent with Ana was a sort of calm in an otherwise
tumultuous and abusive childhood. Once again, LIFE magazine recorded real life, as
we lived it. Thank you, LIFE!

Defense-industry worker Norma Jeane Dougherty, as shot by U.S. Army
photographer David Conover for the June 26, 1945, issue of YANK magazine,
the weekly news for U.S. military personnel. The photo was colorized for
publication, and it is contended by some that this led to modeling and pinup
work and, in 1946, a movie contract with 20th Century Fox where, eventually
she acquiesced to the screen name Marilyn Monroe, mainly because of the
phonic appeal of the "MM" alliteration. It worked, and she finally had her
first real hit with John Huston's multi-Oscar-nominated "The Asphalt Jungle,"
1950. Photo THANKS to Wikipedia and the U.S. Army.
