I put some rattle can zinc prime on the bare metal...its easier to blast off than rust...flash rust happens really fast here...

By the time I got the grille finished up ,and cleaned some of the mess in the shop it was after lunch, it was time to start on the skirts...

That grill looks fantastic, good job on the skirts to. I really love the look of this car, can't wait to see it finished.

  11. Make as much of it as you can. Then you can send it to me for the fine tuning,(Milling) just cost you shipping. It would be neat to see it get accross the country and onto your car.

Looks like a 1/2 inch thick chunk of aluminum would do it. I have a piece here but I need to know rough dimensions. It might not be big enough.

Amen to that! That surround looks factory, hell it looks better than factory! The '41 style skirt works well too. How did you form the skirts?

    Steve, that looks excellent!
Hopefully you didn't wreck your back, working that long.
    Flash rust? Here?
No one believes it unless they see it first hand.

Haha I wish Dave ! I still gotta get the body back off the frame, so I can blast whats lft of the orig floors, and lotsa bodywork...I am hoping to have it running by the summers end...its gonna depend mostly on the money !

I felt pretty good for a long day out there...but paid for it on thurs...only got about 5 hrs in before the back put an end to things, I had other stuff to do today but will be out there in the am..I got all the welding on the quarter & skirt done and a bit of filler on it yest.

Oh I know and I would love a set ...they just arent in the budget in the forseeable future !

Thanks I hope things have improved for your Dad ...

Thanks Eli! You mean it looks the way the factory should have done it  For the skirts I used Daves template and cut it slightly larger then I used some 3/4 X 3/4" 18 guage that I bent up on by buddys brake..which I formed to the shape of the opening and welded on the inside of the quarter (am I making any scense lol?) and I quickly learned that the shrinker stretcher is not as easy to use as they make it look on TV ! I then made the "frame" of the skirt itself then sheeted that in with more 18 guage...I didnt have to wheel it ,I put enough arch in the bottom edge of the skirt that it gave a nice compound curve....I can take more pics when I start the other side , I got going on this one and kinda forgot about the camera!

Looks bitchin Steve. Love that Zinc Chromate, I hear yah on the flash rust thing. Your progress pic's keep me motivated (and many other HAMB members I'm sure) out in the garage during the cold winter months. Keep it up, regards, Rhys.

Lol, yeah thats what I meant about the surround. It gives it a real "finished" look.
I did understand the info on the skirts. Never done any extensive sheetmetal work but your thread puts it in good perspective. I might even try it if I ever get another project. Looking forward to more progress pics. Hell I'll even email you some Hawaii weather if it'll help.:D

  30. This car just keeps getting better and better, I love the way the grille is coming together.
This car is proof positive that you don't have to start with a good car to end up with something cool.
