I remember back in the 60s there was a pontiac tempest drag car named The Tin Indian. based some where out in the south west USA. I'd say Ariazona/New Mexico area pretty sure. A very competive car as I recall. They did a lot of match racing with Arnald Beswick, Haden Proffet and those guys of the 60s fame I was wondering what ever hapened to it. Any hambr's out that way know of this car......

You're welcome. It was pretty interesting that he bought the 66 for $150 and didn't know what he had. By a stroke of luck he found it was an historic drag car and was able to put it back like it was.

Wonder how many others are sitting in garages, back lots, and barns just waiting to be discovered? :)

I live about 15 miles from Pontiac, Illinois where last July they had the grand opening for the Pontiac Automotive Museum (not sure if that is the proper name). I took this picture there..There were lots of awesome Pontiacs there along with alot of Pontiacs in Pontiac for a cruise-in. I had Jim Wagner of GTO fame and Arnie "The Farmer" Besurick Sign my t shirt. Pontiac also has a RT66 museum and a War museum that are all awesome to see. Several good cruise-ins and shows there to make a weekend out of. Hope the picture helps. TomCat 1

I'm sure the car I am looking for was out of either Arizona or New Mexico. It was a 64 pontiac tempest .It was campained as an AFX and was match raced in the mid 60s. It was only raced a couple years as i recal. The last I herd some guy had it in Galloup New Mexico But thats ben oh 25 or 30 years ago. Any way thanks I'll keep trying

Yep, Illinois, seems Pontiac Mi. wasn't interested when approached. Pontiac , Illinois was more than receptive. Tim Dye (the curator) was my next door neighbor until the move to Pontiac to open the museum.

I restored the 70 GTO in the article posted above. They (Kanafel) were really a Pontiac performance dealership in the like of what Yenko was to the Chevy products.

Mickey, didn't Arlen Vanke and Billy Abraham use those names on the cars they raced in the early 60's ?

  15. I thought a tin Indian was any Pontiac race car. There was one sitting in Z auto wrecking in Lynden, WA in the late 70's early 80's. My buddy had a 63 Grand Prix and he was getting some 8 bolt wheel hubs off of it. The car was a 63 Catalina 2 door sedan and had the 8 bolt wheels and we didn't realize it, but it had the aluminum bumpers and lightweight fenders. Someone out of CA heard about the car and scooped it out of the wreckers. We didn't know what it was. No signage on the side or anything to identify it, but must have been a race car as it had a 421 and 4 speed in a 2 door sedan. Pat.
