What's the coolest thing you found in an old car?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by kentucky, Aug 20, 2004.

1. I love this thread. I guess I just like finding things in old cars. It's kind of like a treasure hunt, archaeology, a time capsule, and sometimes "Unsolved Mysteries", all rolled into one. Good stuff.

Oh yeah, I remember when bags were measured by fingers, instead of dollars... When is the last time you ever heard a guy mention a kilo?
Sure seems to be a lot of herb left in these old cars.

I had a OT customer van come in for a "rolling" noise. I found a lead pipe wire tired up under a dash with a marble inside of it.

Bought a 72 Nova as a project for my kid - paid $1200 for a mostly complete and almost running car. In the trunk was a rebuilt 650 Holley and a brand new in-the-box race torque convertor. I’m guessing the carb and convertor were worth ~$350, so I got the car for $850.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" />

9. Not the coolest but sure was a suprise...5 FOOT BLACK SNAKE

10. When I got the cowl side vents open on my COE , I reached down inside and found this knife.
It was on the Swampers side.
Kind of wish it had initials on it, but still cool.

No one can top this. Bought a 71 Plym. 440 GTX from a retired highway patrol
officer in 1983. Driver side door was damaged in a parking lot. While in the body shop for repair they popped off the door panel and discovered a 1/2 pond of Colombian marching powder. When the body shop asked me to come down the police were already there.

12. Yah-know, there's a lot to be said for doing your own body work/door skins!

Well it ain't cool, but in an insurance write off 94 Z28 I bought for the low mileage LT1, I found a bag of cocaine taped under the console, which you had to remove from the car to get at, then after I found that I took the carpet out and found a couple crack pipes near where the backseat would sit

I found an old colt 1911 slide and barrel in the trunk of my 53 Belair. No telling what the hell that thing had seen. Sold it to a friend of mine. I'm sure someone is glad that car can't talk.

Brought home the 40, and about a week later (this past tuesday) found out 3 squirrels hitched a ride... atleast I hope it was only 3... better set some more traps..LOL

So far found the original radiator and 3 extra headlight housings.. and the other 2 tru spokes...not a bad score..

18. Found a gold ring under the back seat of a Beetle I owned years ago,..still have it somewhere.

When I was a mechanic 20 years ago, when ever there was a trade in at the dealership we would rip the back seat out to see what was under there. Generally lots of change,..so a free lunch!

19. Still have the ring,...thankfully NOT the Beetle!! :)

20. I've found all sorts of normal & weird shit in cars.

I still have and use an old Craftsman lug wrench that I've had since 1974 or so. Found some old German porn magazines under the seat of a car I was parting out... real sick scat stuff... girls shitting in each others mouths...'nuff said. Other cars gave up notary seals, doctor's Rx pads, bullets, knives, weed.

I bought a '62 Olds in 1974 that had come from California, went through it and came up with an Air Force ID card of the guy's wife. Turns out it was someone a guy I knew in HS that he was banging after school, she was supposed to be a wild one. Fast forward to 1986, the guy I bought the car from, I bought my house from his father. I mentioned the car to his father and he remembered it.

The trunk also gave up a new NOS set of chrome 394 valve covers, still in the GM box. The box was water stained and in bad shape, but the 'covers inside were perfect. They went onto my '64 Dynamic 88.

Found a 69 class ring in the door of my 50, tried to find the owner for a couple days but then took it in with a bunch of other gold and sold it, ha. Found 80 dollars in change in a POS S-10 I bought that was filthy.

Not me, but there was a guy that died in the campground of the motorhome dealer that is next door to our shop and he owed a buttload of money for work they were doing on his coach. He had a z-71 truck he left at the shop and the makeready guys were told to clean it out and they found a bandage box with 50,000 dollars in it, thats right 50k. I wonder how much they really found before they decided to be good samaritans and turn in the money....

22. Heard a similar story 3rd hand locally. These guys own a shop and buy police auction cars, clean them up & flip them. This one Lincoln had a loose door panel, so they pop it off to see what clips it needed.

They come up with something in the bottom of the door, 3 good-sized bricks of white powder. Not wanting to bring the law to their shop, the bricks were opened and flushed down the toilet.

in the 90's i worked for a company that inspected and wrote up body damage for the rental fleets' GM vehicles when they came off "lease." Avis, Alamo & National were the 3 companies who returned the most cars to the auto auction. I'd always lift up the back seat and constantly found change. Cutlas Cieras and Buick Centurys were the best, for some reason.

We'd also get some off lease high dollar Cadillacs. Found a big ass gold ring, once and paper money a few times.....usually not more than $5 or $10 at a time.

25. This was back in 1976 or so. My buddy buys a '52 or so Dodge parts car. We're going through the trunk, lots of old useless parts, the usual crap. I see these 2 quart-sized cans wedged in towards the back seat.

Thought they were paint cans until we took them outside to read the labels.... they were CREMATION remains of what I guess to be a husband and wife from a local funeral home, dated to the late 1950's. They got put on a shelf in his garage, may still be there for all I know, I'll have to ask him when I run into him.

I spotted a 1936 dodge truck cab in a local farm boneyard a couple of years back. I was able to track down the land owner and he said I could have as long as I didn't mess up his field getting it. It was on it's top, so I rolled it over onto my trailer. I noticed something fall out and it was this 1934 registered chauffeur badge. It will be included in my finished truck someday (shift knob?).

I would have to say the best thing I have found in an old car was some original DC comics from the sixty's stashed under a seat! Its not much but it gave me something to read when I took a break!
