2 30 Model A Pu's 2 different door window openings?

As the ***le says, I have two Pickups. Neither chopped. One has a one inch taller side window opening. The distance from the top of the top hinge to the top of the door is where its at. This truck has a recessed fender for a spare on the driver side as well. The windshield frames and rear gl*** opening match.

Is this odd? Or part of Henry madness!

 

You may want to run that by the gents on Ford Barn and see what they come up with.

 

You have to remember.... Ford had all kinds of people building bodies back then, even "Body by Fisher" made Ford bodies at one point and was the worlds largest manufacturer and also employed more people any any one. I've ran into differences like this with my Model T bodies... brackets were different and dimensions were different, half the time they made em like they wanted or used other brackets from similar vehicles they had on hand!

The fit and finish just wasn't there back then!

 

ford ch***ies were sent all over the world and THEN fitted with bodies, 2 door, 4 door, coupe and 3 or 4 styles of pick-ups....these bodies were made by dozens of different plants in all corners of the world. Anything is possible. Just because you have a ford, don't mean the body was made by Henry....lol

 

Even out of Henry's own plants there was all sorts of weird stuff. Parts bins were routinely run-out until empty, even if they were from another year or model. The '28-'29 Model A CC/PU's are built with leftover Model T doors and cowl posts.

Are the belt lines the same on both sets of doors?

 

Agreed. My Dad's old '30 A coupe was built by him back in the '60's and the original rear fenders were still bolted to the body. It wasn't until one of them got damaged and had to be replaced in the '70's that he found out they were actually '29 fenders.

 

I understand there are many variances.
But this seems like a big one. The part I don't follow is the top roof corners must be different because the window heights are the same, the cab isn't any higher, its just the doors go further up into the roof so to speak.
I need to order the roof side patch panels and there isn't two options for them.

I know there are lots of differences and variables but was curious if anyone has ran across this one.

It was discovered as I was comparing how much to chop it.

I thought I read that Ford bought the truck cabs from Briggs, Murray or Budd. but it looks like that Ford did build the 28 to 31 cabs.

although they also add this:
Budd Mfg., Hayes Body Co. and Midland Steel Corp. all supplied Model A stampings and steel sub-***emblies and later on Budd built complete truck cabs and van bodies as well.

Budd did the cabs for the DeLuxe Pickups. Those ones with the body sides tied to the cab.

 

and late '31 (solid top) was built by Budd

Briggs and Murray built four doors..

 

Ill post some pics on Monday when I get back to the shop. I discovered this when we were comparing the two in how much to chop, and what the visibility would be.

 

They should be the same. I suspect one cab was pieced together from a fordor at one time, that was comonly done. The 30-31 pick-up uses the same doors as a tudor, even the later Budd built cabs.

 

Can you measure you're truck on the window opening to match up with mine.
I know the one that is shorter of an opening matches up with my 30 coupe.

 

Generally speaking are the fordoor doors taller than a coupe or tudor sedan?

 

not really sure what you are talking about but it could have a coupe cowl on it. the top of the cowl post are around 3/4 or 1" shorter than the sedan and truck ill have to dig in the shead to measure to give the correct measurements....

 

If it matches up with the door height of a coupe, that's your problem. Coupe doors are unique to coupes. Tudor and pickup doors are taller and the same as one another. Not sure where fordor doors fit in, never slowed down long enough to look at one.

 

Coupe doors are also shorter front to back though. approx 27 1/4" on the coupe compared to approx 29 1/4" for the tudor/pickup door if my memory is working correctly.

Also, all of the 4-dr doors i've had are essentially wood structure with sheetmetal skins tacked on.

 

The above three posts are correct.

I had a chance to compare to my tudor and coupe over the weekend.

One appears to have coupe doors/cowl.
