Hi! Building a FED in late 50´s style, and need some measure ; how wide should cc be between the rails? I think maybe 58 cm? Do you have any drawing on frame? Thanks!

That was a question that I posed to Wayne Ewing when he built my first.....he measured the distance between the outside of my shoulders.....thinking that it should be "enough"......we forgot the Deist firesuit.....all my racers were never really wide enough....all were a tight fit....including all the other ones that I drove.....MadDog

I see But wouldn't it be cool to run run flat-out once in a while? Just think'n, put alot of hours in it just to make a 60 feet run? I know you proably could run it at HRR Malmby, but that is the only place. Most vintage dragrace stuff are gatered in SVDA to be able to run old stuff, then it might be a good idea, to be able to run it legal? ............................... Taildragger&fenderless
A lot are 18"; there is no rule for this measurement so there isn't any 'legal' issue involved. Generally, it is the shoulder width kinda. The early cars/specs were built for smaller guys so they were narrower, finding a 5'8" 145lb guy was easier back then and you could just kinda force him there being he was the littlest all he could do was yell and complain.
Mine was 19, backhalfed to 24. Way too wide. Gets dangerous if you bounce around. Next one will be 21. The guy I put in the car now is smaller and I have a seat built up and molded to fit him. Pull it out for my fat ass.
These dimensions are between the rails. Don't forget to add one tubing diameter to get the c-c dimension.
Your spelling is fine. Don't sweat it. I think if you do a search you can find dims for older style digger chassis. Like the one that tardel builds.
make it to fit your body + a fire suit and any interior padding, you want to fit snug but comfortable. too many guys buy or build old style chassis's that were made for smaller guys & do not fit correctly. this can be a driving & safety issue. you may need to increase your main frame at the back to accomodate a wider shoulder hoop but you can taper it back in torwards the front. thats just my $0.02 Paul fyi- I have measurements and photo's that depict the building of a 1959 98"wb big tube Lyndwood dragster like mine on CD. It's kind of like a blueprint so to speak, it is based on my dragster but measurements can be changed to fit your frame/height etc. PM me with an address & I can mail you one.
