Sorry to hear of your loss! If that merc was a chopped 51 with an upside down 50 back window and an otherwise stock body, I know the car. If it's it, its still around.

Hopefully this may take your mind off things, if this is your brothers old car. The ad was from the 70's and the car ended up owned by Kurt McKormick and eventually got the full custom tratment in N.Y. I hope this was it!

wow, thats the merc, that guys dad was a teacher at the jr high with my mom and somehow through the local car club we set up a barn 'peek' back in the 70's ! i thought this thread was dead after a few days, but i really appreciate your guys help ! its a small world. i hope some guys from steves california days will see it and respond. steve did work for barris and was always taking nice photos with nice camera's. dont know what will turn up but steve certainly had downsized possessions considerably.

adamshumard sent you a p.m. before i saw the photos of the steve harper/del bartel 51 merc

reading the small print, it was a daryl starbird chop ! i never knew! all we were ever told was about his savings strategies to pay for the chop and the trip to wichita. 100 hrs for $100 at the gas station.

Your brother's probably just getting started on a new project car in Heaven.
In fact, I think my kid brother Elliot is helping him.

    "RIP"..... to both of them.

My condolences on your loss. I'll bet he had a few good stories from his days working for the Barris brothers....

Yes, After Kurt sold the car, it ended up in N.Y. with 56 Clipper lights, painted bright red with the headlights frenched and the corners rounded.

I remember your brother very well, always full of ideas and enthusiasm.
I worked part time for him when he had his shop on Groesbeck Hwy. doing wiring on limos and other projects. Also the upholstry guy he had working there (Dennis?) did the interior in my 37 Chevy the first time.
I always wondered what happened to Steve, He was a great guy.
My condolences on your loss and may he rest in peace.

Sorry for your loss. I still miss my brother Scott and it's been 10 years. I'm glad that I still get that ache in my stomach when I think about him. It tells me that I was blessed to have him as a brother. I know that you will miss your brother as well, sounds like a cool guy. Prayers sent.

harp, I know how you feel, I lost an older brother while I was away from home on a project in December '06 and I had nowhere else to go but the HAMB for support from fellow HAMBers. As you deal with the loss it is nice to know that there is a community behind you.

I own one of the cars Steve built back in 1975. It is a custom 1975 Cadillac Fleetwood Estate 9 p***enger station wagon. Has the disappearing tailgate and the big 500 cid V-8.

So sorry for your loss. I just found out today. I worked for Steve back in maybe '84 and '85. He was definitely a creative guy and a lot of fun. Godspeed Steve.

I lost a brother in 2006. I still feel it. He was my age when he died and the anniversary of his death is soon. I feel the way you do man. Miss him, but remember the love.
