I do everything myself - sometimes not well, but I do it. I had to learn quite a few things along the way, like pinstriping which was a bit harder than I expected :D

The biggest problem is not having the experience of what not to get into or how to do things the most efficient way. I end up doing things more difficult than they should be just because I have to figure it out along the way. The saving grace is that i can have a few completely original moments since I have had to come up with creative solutions.

There are tons of pics in the blog links in my signature about work done and what i've had to come up with along the way.

Engine machine work and upholstery are the only things I've ever had to farm out, everything else is done in my backyard shop.

I just bought a commercial sewing machine and I'm teaching myself to do auto upholstery. I'll never fork out 2,000.00 again for someone else to sew up a car for me.

This is my next learning experience as well. I have a bit of a head start, 30 years ago,I took a 6 month night school course in auto upholstery, but I haven't touched it since. We'll see how much I remember.:eek:

Well my first and and still on going project. A 1932 Es*** Terraplane coupe. I have done everything my self so far from building the frame to what you see except headers, narowed 9 inch , ring and pinion set up. My friend is building an aluminum gas tank. The body was chopped with unfinished welding when I got it. So learning as I go not perfect but I hope will be a good driver.

My son and I do everything here at home. We built the ch***is from a Buick Regal donor frame. Doing the bodywork and paint here also. The only thing we will farm out is the chrome plating. If you need any more motivation, I am 44 and have to use a wheelchair most of the time and my son is 17 but is a very capable welder and fabricator. Good Luck!

  9. That thread ended up being ignorant beyond belief, I was actually thinking about it and it occured to be that an Effie is a Ford truck. ;)

I build my own and always have. Too **** about too many things, well except how the tires are mounted.

You don't want to see picas but we put the engine that I build in my living room in the Pusher in a 10 wide garage in the dead of winter. We had to open the garage door to pull the old mill and put the new mill in. The cherry picker had ice cycles (sp?) hanging off of it before we were done with that part of it. it was so tight that with the door closed you had to crawel under the truck to get to the other side. The dirver door was by the side door that went into the kitchen that was how we got inside if we needed to.

I do but I have to admit that it takes a lot longer than I'd like. I may farm out the paint to someone that know what they are doing and has a clean paint to do it in.

My panel...Total garage job...Debating the paint, but I think financially, I'll have to tough it out and spray it in my Jethro paint booth.

That hudson actually has nice lines, looks pretty good chopped. Not wild about the grill shell but the body itself looks damn good.

When traditional hot rod material got insane in price I happened to see a old picture of SoCal speed shop and it happened to have a MG TD parked in front that had a V8-60 in it. Found a small grill TR-3 Triumph that I could afford and started that about 30 years ago. 231 Buick, Saganaw 4sp and 10 bolt rear kinda narrowed up a bit. Sure has been a lot of fun even though not many hot rodders know what to say. Back to the subject, it was all done in a unheated 2 car garage with the exception of the interior.

    Regards

I do everything myself but have been known to buy a 1/2 project or "almost complete" car. I also do all the remodeling work on the farm, fix my heavy equipment, and anything else that someone charges money to do! I'm not extra "handy", just too cheap/tight/broke to pay anybody!

Yup everything short of engine machine work, and if I had the room and the machines I would have tried that as well.

Auto transmission - bought a book rebuilt it myself. This one really surprised me as to how easy it was to do. Of course it was a 700r4 so there are tons of books and websites out there to help out.

Upholstery - bought a machine, bought another book, did it myself. Its not easy, but its not as hard as I made it out to be either. There is a very good upholstery group on here that can help with any issues.

Paint/body - have not done the final body work yet, but when I do I will certainly give it a shot.

All in a small "two" car garage

Isn't that what this place is all about?

Love this thread, My buddies and I have built my whole car ourselves. Ch***is ,body work, all the brackets, controls. Suspension, even the fuel tank. I have a small machine shop at home, so all the parts are made at home and brought to my fiends house where I’m building the car. It’s been 4 years of Saturdays and some Sundays. Almost done wiring and dialing stuff now can’t wait for spring
