Phil,Glad to see your J coming along!!! Hope to see you on Saturday night,I,ll buy you a beer, Ha Ha Jim F
Metal etching primer on the bottom with good old Rustoleum for the top coat. It was a balmy 42 degrees out there when I shot it..lol
Looks like Friday I will be bolting the carbs, new MSD distributor/wires, flexplate etc...in preperation to run the new engine. I decided to run the engine at the builders shop on his run in stand which will be done the following Monday. I hope to have the J up and running by Christmas if all goes well. I also want to thank the Hamb guys that bought some of my parts to keep this project on a roll, THANKS !
I had a Henry J with a Caddy in the early sixties and I have a soft spot in my heart for these little cars. 12.90 @ 112 best time in quarter_A_gas
Awesome! Took mine for a 50 mile ride today. It's amazing how many people come up and talk to you when you got an oddball like an HJ.
They've allready got a layer of salt on the roads here, not much for driving on with an old car if you want to keep it looking like something. I did get all the stuff on and looks like it's ready to go for Monday, kinda excited about that. ha ha ha
Had the engine running yesterday, plauged by a couple leaky banjo fittings at the carb and also a vaccume leak at the rear carb gasket area. It ran good up till 5700 and then seemed to be running out of fuel, I noticed the pressure guage was only at 3 1/2 lbs on the run in stand. I dropped it back in the waiting engine bay last night before my back said that was enough for the day. Things are looking up !
I've been pretty sick the last week n half but trying to get a little done here and there. Funny with all the engine mess it sure looks the same as before. I feel like I've been through a crazy roller coaster ride to get back where I started..twilight zone stuff....lol
Thanks, after looking at this picture again I'm going to switch back to the M\T valve covers. For some reason I think the Micky's just say performance a little bit better than the cal-customs. (edit) However they look good on this dummy engine; weird
I don't know Phil.... I think the Cal covers look more trad for your style car. B.T.W.: Looooking gooood!
Looks really great, coming along super. The cal cover have breather on them, but those breather need to be near the intake, not outside by the ex. I see that mistake fairly offten, they work very poor at best by EX,leak oil ect.
I've ran those valve covers both ways on the t-bucket and just saying, I didn't see a difference. They actualy had a small moon breather on the other side so no matter which way they were, there still was a breather near the exhaust. Being on a open engine bay car may of had something to do with, but no fires.
This is what I came up with on the fuel lines, 150 degree fitting out of the regulator to the rear carb, added a section that had a female 1/8 npt for the gauge and off of that to the front carb. None of the lines touch the intake or thermostat housing and you can adjust the pressure just fine on the regulator. Looks a little stringy but not a lot of options on plumbing the lines to keep them cool. I finaly got an e-mail back from Holley and they said one regulator is good for a 450 hp motor be it one carb or duals, so I stuck with one regulator.
Hey Phil, its too early in the AM to be posting !! HA HA Great to see everything has come together... See you in the spring !
I feel your pain Phil..... However; one great looking 'J' with a new heart ! Pretty soon you will have to buy her a new pair of shoes for the rear !
Yes you are right, the current shoes are cast offs from Johnny Oddy. I hope to catch up with you guys at one of the races. You should put that Gold Cup at Empire on your calendar, Gasser Wars magazine had a nice article on it or maybe see ya at Thompson.
swade41, Love the thread! Thanks for all the great info. I just bought one & appreciate you sharing your build!
The new motor is looking good in the Henry J. For what it's worth, my vote is for the Cal Custom covers. Hope you're past the cold, it's kicking my ass right now.
Thanks, what are you going to do with yours ? The cold is getting out of here but still hanging in a bit. I did put the M/T's back on but might switch over to the cal-customs if I get tired of them. I spent the last couple days fixing a slight fuel drip at the fuel pump fittings and running a bigger line from the tank to the filter. I had -6 line back there and went with 1/2 inch since I was redoing it. It was getting cold out there working without heat to keep the flames down with all the gas fumes in the air. I put in 2 gallons lastnight, hopefully there will be no drips when I put power to the pump and check the new lines.
I'm getting my car back up and rolling with the straight axle and 9 inch rear and then I want to deal with some floor rust issues. The pans aren't too bad but I think if I have sense enough, I want to replace them with new ones. Front and rear pans on Ebay aren't too expensive.
I bought my outer rockers off e-bay from the guy in Michigan, the guys on the restorer forum said they were pretty darn close to original with the correct taper. I would think the other guys stuff would be of the same quality. Jack can't wait to see yours back on all fours, I want to check out that new gasser stance too. I still need to weld up a couple pin holes in the headers, spotted those after taking things back apart. Pretty easy to spot the carbon trail on those white headers...lol Once that is done and on I should be able to put the radiator back in. I would like to have it up and running by the end of the month to give it the once over. I'm putting it in an old school hot rod room at a local car show on March 4th if all goes well.
