Chet Norris was older than me. He was my late brother Bill's age. Ron and I were the same age and were pals. Chet drove this Kool silver '39 Chevy with a loaded six at the time. I think he drove one of V.H. race cars then too. There was a lot of hot rodding going on in that neighborhood at the time. Bryan Bernard across the street had a baby blue '46 Ford convert. Later built a '33, '34 coupe that looked a lot like yours Marcus. Same color, flathead and all. Glen Meyer was building his '31 hemi. powered "A" show winning roadster. Rodders Journal #39 page 54.

Thanks M.Edell! That is great stuff! There was a Vic Hubbard's in Livermore behind Livermore High School (just down the street from the feed store). In the 80's we used to cut school all the time to go over there and bother the dude behind the counter, he had a bad ass 70/71? Camaro...green, it ran sweet! Then they moved locations to 1st St. directly across from my house!! The guy with the green Camaro hated me! I was in there every weekend just dreaming, couldn't afford much of anything but hats and T-shirts, It was awesome.
Love the footage of Fremont Drag Strip, when I was in high school I used to race my 69 Satellite there on Grudge Night (Wednesday's officially known as High School Night). I only pissed Chet off once, after that I felt like I was a pro. I raced in one Muscle Car Shootout, made it pretty far, then got knocked out by a Corvair! I had a VH sticker on my car just in case I won maybe I could get a discount or something. The good old days!

Good Film Marcus! In the early 60's, I towed my buddy's 39 Willys that we put his built 348 in, With my 57 Pontiac. when we got there and paid, they said "since you
Paid you want to run the Pontiac? "OK". we ran the Willys several runs, and he got beat. they called "Last call for B stock automatic" ( I think that was the class).
So I went up and raced this guy and won, and took home a Trophy!

Sometime around 1959, the Bread Truck blew an engine (296 flathead?) at Fremont drags, and a friend (Hank Silva, of RODSIL, in Atwater) loaned them the engine out of his '32 Three window.
Hank's engine powered the Bread Truck for 3 weeks, then it was returned when the B.T. received a much-modified DeSoto Hemi.
The Bread Truck turned quicker E.T. with the flathead.

Maybe it was an unauthorized franchise. I could be wrong (not the first time...and I'm sure it wouldn't be the last), but I could swear it was Vic Hubbard's Speed and Marine. I can see the sign in my head, I've been away from that area since 88 so maybe my recollection is off. I know we pestered the guy for a "sponsorship" (haha, that makes me laugh now), he said that VH already sponsors enough stuff, he gave me a VH sticker and said if I won maybe I could get a discount or something. He was probably just trying to get rid of us no money punks. I'll ask my step-pop, he seems to remember everything like that.

Awesome thread, thanks for sharing, between VH and Supershops in the mid 80's, they took alot of my gas station money, haha.

LOL..Hows that Truck doing? VH and Super Shops took my money too! I worked for both places, I got a little bit of a discount, but I ended up spending all my paychecks on parts, the temptation was too great!

What special needs school in Lakeport? Might go by and try to buy them back. They could probably use a donation. Of course they probably sold them at a yard sale. UUUUGGGG.

If I find them one is yours Marcus.

We are so fortunate to have such a rich Hot Rod history here in Northern California! Here are some more photos from the Headhunters/Vic Hubbards in the 1950's.

Step-pop said it was Vic Hubbards, I told him you guys said there wasn't one in Livermore, now he is not sure either. Anyone around Livermore in the 80's remember the name of the speed and marine? Man it sucks getting old.
