Features Dropped Axles and Aesthetics...

  1. Here's another question - what about the Deuce Factory stainless axle? It looks a lot like a heavy '32 - any thoughts? I really like stainless . . .

I've always liked cars that have a nice stance but use a stock, non-dropped axle. Just my own personal taste...

Dang, this has to be one of the longest threads to remain civil that I have read in a long time. What's wrong with you people?! HAAHAhaha

Anyway, I think both sides have made valid points and even more than that, there is a definite third side that appreciates both. Like some of us have said, it's all in the line you draw and your personal background.

  4. Wow ,what an educational thread, thanks everybody.

here's a 37-41 dropped by "296 v8" here on the hamb for us. I'd rather have a Henry axle than a new one...

  8. Old thread but a good one!

I have built my own jig and want to know if these are good enough for you?

The first one I dropped is the lower one and it´s 3"(+1" stock)

When I dropped the other axle, I went as far as I dared! It´s 4 3/4" (+1" stock) Both Model A-axles.

I have loved this picture for a long long time. Stock axle with only reversed eyes?

  11. "I have two very special cars that I'm saving parts for... one is an ultra traditional Banger powered '23 T... and the other is a '28 Phaeton."

Damn what a difference 3 years makes!

The '28 Phaeton is down the road and being enjoyed by TERPU after changing hands a couple of times... and the banger powered T has morphed into a Bonneville car that we'll be racing at Bonneville with Enbloc's motor in it (being shipped out from England)...

AND... get this... the banger powered Bonneville car has a Magnum 5" dropped axle under the front!

    Hahahahahaha!!

Oh... I still have the old dropped axle in the corner... and the Kelseys from my dad...

Plans are to build some kinda T with them on it... been thinking about a '27 T sedan turned into a tub... hmmmmmmmmmmm!!!

Hitchhiker, That is one clean and very well done dropped axle. I am trying to use only original axles and they seem to have a different feel then these aftermarket ones. I have a brandnew Magnum axle and it will be going under my '41 Ford (don't curse me too much - Street Rod . . . ). Lets me have an original axle from a '40 Ford coupe that has been dropped for another project !

  14. Thanks Dave. This is a 36 that I sent out. Glad I did it. I've seen a few pictures of the later axles that 296 V8 has done and they look great too.

Hitchhiker, Correct me if I am wrong. I thought that a '36 to '41 were the same axle. It maybe '37 to '41 are the same. I think my '41 has a clean axle not dropped too much but just clean looking.
Looking forward to seeing it under your "A" !

HPIM8548 (Small).JPG HPIM8360 (Small).JPG Maybe looks are the reason many builders buy new axles instead of dropped originals even though originals can be had for less $$ most times and are readily available. I would never run an aftermarket on anything I build for myself, there is just something about a nicely dropped original that says true hotrod, even a "taffy drop", as some say. For the previous comment on the Super Bell wings logo in the recess, I have milled them off both sides on a half dozen or so axles for customers. I guess it all comes down to, "beauty is in the eye of the beholder". To me, Ford axles are a thing of beauty, dropped or not:)

Here are a couple of model A axles I dropped for friends. The first is a very slight drop to kind of mimic the 32, The other has a 3 1/2" drop.

^ yep, Model A axles do look nice IMO. Just dropped is fine, I rather not have the drilled holes on an old time backyard style car.

Probably should be required reading for someone building an open wheel, traditional hot rod. I forgot about it, when redoing my T Bucket. Won't make that mistake again. I went with a Super Bell, but I'll go with an odd inch dropped gennie next time around.

A couple of years ago I thought I seen a simular thread on who all offered the drop axle service for the Model A's. I looked for it about a month ago and could not find it. I found several that dropped the 37-41's. Anyone have a list of all of the HAMB members that offer this service for the A axles? Thanks Rod

In all honesty man that doesn't matter on this thread,

    They're ugly and not traditional.

...But I hear they're forged and safe...

Sent my A axle off to Greg (296 V8). Three inch drop, I think it came out great.

You'll have to overlook the shiny Speedway perches and shackles:
