IH SV mills are capable of being hot rodded. Bored, stroked, decked, cam ETC. They respond well to many of the same upgrades as the Chysfordolets.

I've build many of them and many were hot builds
I build these for local IH owners and can tell you from experience that they will make good power. They'll turn 6000 given better valve springs.

One week point they have is the heads. They take some work to get flow out of them. But they will never achieve rates of say a well groomed SBC.

Have a question on what can be done? Have a look here. http://www.ihonlynorth.com/forums/ Pretty much a no BS place for IH info.

AHHH>>> yes 4x4 but 2wd had c-6. My 1969 1300 had one. It now has a T-78. Most early 2wd had c-6s. Both need two people to pick up mind you! I still have most of the c-6 I had. I never did like it. But im not a Ford man!

If you were to do that with an other brand CAR engine, your statement would be "correct", but apples and oranges comparison. Swap with a similar spec other brand light truck/pickup engine, and they'd run about the same, and would be a valid comparison. A 345 Binder, 361 Ford, 366 Chebbie, had them all, ran about the same. Same with a 392 Binder, 391HD, 396 Chebbie truck engines, about the same performance. The Binders are very durable, and in my experience, got the best mileage when pulling heavy loads- biggest gas hogs were always the Chebbies. My gramps owned an International truck & tractor dealership, a trucking company with different brand trucks, and several farms, so I got quite a bit of experience with the different brands, we had Binders, Fords, Chebbies, REO's etc. Hop-up info for Binders is easy- check out the tractor pulling guys- quite a few IH truck engines seem to find their way into old Farmalls and throw some serious dirt

My old 1969 1300 weighs in at 7600 MT. She gets 11 mpg loaded hi-way.

Might want to see for sure what you have, as you have mentioned both "cast iron" and "early"- if earlier than '66, can't be a C6, as that's when it came out- C6 just means "1966". Never heard of a cast-iron C6 either, except for a small quan***y of cast iron tailhousings for CJ cars etc. The early Cruise-O-Matic and later FMX did have a cast iron main body, and will have a bolt-on bellhousing, which would make it very easy to just make a bell for IH engines, while a C6 has a one-piece bellhousing/main case in aluminum. And yes, the cast-iron Cruise-O-Matic is a heavy ****er- especially the large-case version, which would probably be used in a pickup

Its a '69. mabe it is FMX, The pan is square like a c-6. But it does have a bolt on bellhousing. The few IH guys that I hangout with call em c6. They are in there late 50s and not on the web.

A Pickup truck Spec. 392 IH will run circles around a "pickup truck" spec. 390 FE, I've owned a few examples of each.
Also under high load applications the Binder will last longer than the 390, 396 or the 383.

Oh and the 396 (402) chev truck engine put in suburbans and pickups (I've owned these too)was nothing special (low compression small port heads). I'd put a 392 up against one any day of the week.

Yes car versions of the 390 383 and 396 would go faster...but we are talking truck motors here....and car motors are not designed for high load full throttle operation for hours on end.....;)

And it would probably get at least 3 more mpg than the gashog Chebbie :p

IH rodded their scout engines for off road racing. I think Vintage Truck had an article about it a few years ago.
In the early 30's, Willy's built the 1/2 ton trucks for IH. IH bought Willy's engine design and that became the Red diamond engine. It was renaimed the Black Diamond and also the Silver Diamond at some point. Improvements were made in design through the years.
It was rumored years ago that the IH V8's were loosely based on the Packard V8's before the Packardbaker days.

This is a hot rod site,pu's and cars not 10 wheel dump trucks :D
I've driven many medium gas engine trucks and buses. The IHC may last longer but it isn't the fastest or strongest puller in my opinion.

IH never used a Ford FMX or C6 auto transmisson they used a TF727 in the later years (1971+) and a Borg Warner auto in the earlier years (pre 1970) and in the 1950's they used a trans similar to a Powergulide. And in the IHs (other then the scouts and 1974-75 trucks t-all) a 2 wheel drive trans in the same as a 4x4 they used a devored transfer case. IH engines are hard to kill, the drivetrains out last the bodies thats for sure. I like Binders just a little bit, owned 78 Scouts 1961-1980 and 45 trucks and talls 1934-1975. If you want a hot SV IH engine look up Jim Maulis Jr out side Castle Rock Colorado.

Your statement was still bogus, comparing car engines to pickup and truck engines isn't valid. All those truck engines, size by size, run about the same and use a fair amount of fuel- and the Chebbies eat the most gas without running any better

Gene, the IHC is a dedicated truck engine, the Chevy ,Ford and Mopar engines are originally car engines. When you remove a dedicated truck engine from the truck to use it in a "hot rod",then it gets compared to the car engines.
And a 366 Chevy ,while not the best of the bunch will run away from a 361 FE or IHC while hauling 5 yards of stone in a 6 wheel dump truck. And while I'm no Ford guy for sure ,after working on FE's in them school buses I have a lot of respect for their durability and smoothness.

The biggest issue with them is the almost total lack of aftermarket support. International didn't release a lot of items for the aftermarket to make replacements for. That means for a lot of the pieces you have to go back to International and pay full list International prices because that is the only place you can get a lot of the pieces for the engines.

In years past I worked for Ryder Truck Rental and did most of the parts chasing during the time I worked there. A lot of the time we had to have the vin number off the truck to make sure we got the right part for the gas engines along with only being able to get the part at International and be at the mercy of their parts clowns. They didn't like to wait on us because Ryder got a deep discount off International even though they knew we were going to take the part when they dug it out and didn't worry about the cost.

When i worked in a tire store before that we had to go to IH to get a lower radiator hose for a Travelall with a 345 in it because no aftermarket hose maker made one.

They are solid trucks with serious engines that do what they were designed for well and long but not what a guys wants if he plans to hop it up unless he has access to a lot of engine machine equipment and the ability to build a lot of his own pieces besides.

Your talking med and HD truck applications... engines in the med and HD trucks are governed, and are carbed different Therefore not applicable in this argument.

We were talking about these engines in pickups...Last I checked a 366 never came out in a pickup:D

I had a 69 Travelall with a 304/727. It would pull anything you hooked to it but it certainly wasn't a hot rod. I got 10MPG empty and 9 1/2 pulling 5000# worth of trailer and race car.

Guys are baggin' the IH motors for lackin' power.

I bet the same guys wouldn't bat an eyelid at somebody puttin' a flathead V8 in a rod.

If ya can fog a mirror ya have enough ability to fit a sbc to a rod...

    Nuff sed.

The only reason I can see to use an IH engine is to go big. If that is your reason, why not step up to the 549? That coupled to a ten speed RoadRanger was the fastest ten wheeled dump I ever saw or drove, loaded or empty. Or, you could play with the 450 or the 501 six with the factory four barrel. Heavy, yes. But at about 4.5 to 4.9 MPG, they would outpull anything except the 534 Ford on a long hill.

We had exactly that setup in NY, a Fleetstar 2010 with a 549/RR, and it would indeed boogie with the best if you let it eat. A few years back I drove a V200 with a 478, and it was no slouch, either. One of the guys had an F800 with a 534, and had cutouts on the exhaust that stuck straight out the sides- he used to back off and wait for one of the diesel guys to pull up alongside on a hill, open the cutouts in their ear and floor it and walk away- used to get cussed out regularly :D
There was also a severely ratty old Diamond T that belonged to a septic service that hauled with us for a while, and had an RD501 six in it. It had originally had a 406 that revved higher and was geared for that, so it was on the governor of the 501 at 51 mph, so the boys with the new Macks and screamers always picked on him about the "****box" One of the guys with a new Maxidyne p***ed him on the flat just before a long hill at 51, Mack started slowing down on the hill, DT still at 51.. That old wreck had one of those big bumpers with the sign board/guard that they like back east on it, and he ****ed it up against the back of that new Maxidyne and pushed him all the way up the hill in sight of a couple of the other guys :( The old "****box" became an instant hero to all the guys running "g***ers"- and none of the diesel guys gave him any more ****

I "hotted" up an inline six engine some 8 years ago - we took a 240ci block and over bored it to 264 pistons, planned .050 off the block and .060 off the head to pull the compression up, tickled the cam, balanced the whole lot added freer flowing split exhaust manifolds and adapted a 2 barrel carb to a truck intake manifold, added electronic dizzy courtesy of RHAD on here and off we went. The engine was a stump puller however the long stroke and heavy nature of the rods and pistons meant you had a large reciprocating m*** and hell of a piston speed as the revs got up. Engine was fine up to about 3800rpm however once p*** that it was revving too hard and was "fussy". The high piston speed meant you could seize a piston to the bore very easily - the hi revs created so much heat they would fail - adding bore to piston side wall clearance certainly helped however the rest of the design issues meant that it was not just one factor that limited the engine - it was a combination of many things. At the end of the exercise I felt that we succeeded yet the engine was not going to be anything else than a great medium truck engine from the 50/60's. Sure we could have kept going however the piston top design is unique and there is no solution in getting the bore to stroke ratio better. Gereat service engines - just not hot rod engines. The v8's are another chapter and the International boys did sell their 345 in a 1/2 tonne pickup marketed as a "Johnny Rebel" in the southern states with some success. And of course the offroader Scout boys still love them in their various guises
