I had read in a few authorative write ups that the reason the NHRA, at least in part, banned the use of Jeep style bodies was because the Big 3 was pumping money into the sport and JEEP wasnt. Maybe pro-active ass kissing. Although by the time Lenarth had the HollyToledo car running the Big 3 had no longer seen funnies cars as the way to sales but rather SS and the soon to be surfacing pro stock class. As for mocking those of us who have euipped our familes with their own tin foil hats, its not "foil" but a special alloy derived from Roswell. Says so write on the box pal! So dont come screaming to us when THEY arrive, cuz we aint gonna help.

The car was built by Mike Lloyd of Lloyd Racing Enterprises in Middletown, Pa.

Okay, okay I stand corrected on the tin foil....but you gotta admit, Dave has been in Alabama too long, he needs to move back home to California.

Man this car cleaned up in 1969. Won the PDA, the last Hot Rod Magazine Championships- I was there for that one- and another huge 32 car circus that I cant recall right now. Car won its share of points meets too.

  7. This car is restored and is a regular at SoCal events. Here it is at the Winternationals a few years ago. Looks EXACTLY as it did.

Darn. I was able to find out later for myself, and it looks like I may have lost this one.

Anyone remember a black/gold roof Mustang fastback with a Turbonique thruster called Ozark Mule out of Arkansas?
At the present moment I can not recall the track where I saw it, but was probably Lakeland in Memphis.

Please don't tell me I've gotten confused yet again. The car I'm thinking of looked just like this one w/o the wing and had a gold roof. Didn't think there could ever have been more than 1 like this. It was around in 67' or 68' maybe, but having a difficult time right now recalling where I saw it.

Man, Souls Shaker must have weighed a ton compared to the Anglia's and Willys that proliferated the C/Gas class. But hey, the front end is up, so it obviously had some good launch potential.

I recall the ads depciting it, the VW Bug, and a Dodge Dart. I will check my Drag News CD set and get some numbers, etc this weekend. I recall its being reported in the CD as it matched raced. There was also a T bodied altered that ran a Turbonique motor. Based on the magazine article it ran high 8's at about 170. It was for sale in HRM for almost a year. Not a lot demand for a 98" wheelbased car with a turbine motor I guess.

Love that low stance! First time I've seen one of the stock* wheelbase A/FXers lowered like that.

    *Stock-ish wheelbase, that is.
