I've been helping Boones with some simple stuff on his cool Chevy HT he picked up last year, and I remembered he had this huge-by-ugly Dodge woody. He was kind enough to send me some pics, and since I'm not one to back away from a challenge, I wanted to give it a digital whoopin'. He just wanted it cleaned up and painted, so no serious butchering.

I affectionately nicknamed it the Trojan Tank. This is where I'm at so far- It still needs some work, but I think this thing could be really cool.

    Enjoy!

Thanks much, R&K. Kinda happened by accident (like most of my stuff, hahaa) and I just worked around it.

You nailed that wagon with the two-tone gold and wires! Nice and classy!

  5. Rot 'n Kustom - Nice work on the gold estate wagon look. Your custom touch was nicely done and helps lighten the bulk of the upper side view. One of these days I'll have to try to tackle one of these myself.

James D as usual provided the best "dressed down" look with Salt Flat Specials.

Rot, your PS progress shows, which is decent growth. Removing B pillar in this instance makes the car look fake though. More believable had you switched to suicide doors, or removed gap between doors and left post from waist up. Your cut lines always remain an afterthought and as such, pics don't look polished. Couple more minutes hiding them instead of description and the overall effect becomes far better.

Sinister, fun idea on wagon. Too many contrasting light sources makes it look really fake though. Been there many times when I was just learning program too.

SouthUrn- Thanks for the complement, but I have zero desire to strive for photo-realism. I do this for free because I have the talent to help others imagine their vision. I am self taught in the digital field, and don't consider myself "pro" by any stretch of the imagination.

Since you're new here, feel free to jump in and give us a hand, or post some of your work for open critique so the rest of us can learn something? :)

Thanks for the constructive criticism. I have noticed a bit of blurry color on the door lines after posting.

As for the B-pillar - have another look, I didn't remove it. Just closed the center gap between the doors.

  10. I tend to agree - I think it´s more about the ideas, and showing people what they could do, rather than producing perfectly finished artwork. Most of mine get knocked out in my lunch break, so there isn´t time to make them 100%. But I enjoy it, it gives me something to do, some practice and helps folks out.

Rot´n - wires and wide whites would be just perfect on that wagon. They make you say wow, even if the rest of the car isn´t perfect. Good thinking.

Thanks, James. I see these photoworks as digital idea sketches, too.
Mine usually get done 1st thing in the morning, just before work. One hand on the mouse, and the other on the coffee mug.

Maybe if I cut out the coffee, my lines would be straighter...NAH! :D

    Just curious ....
    I m a beginner ....
How long does it takes you to do a simple thing as changing the color of a car, like the A with a 32 grill I made on this page ?
This took me about 1 1/2 hour ... And far from perfect .. Couldn t get the color as I wanted . I just have a mouse , 2 screens and The Gimp, maybe I should get a tablet :)

  13. You don´t need a tablet. I´ve only ever tried one once.

I have one in fact, but it s a serial tablet, which only works with Windows 95 :)

So how long does this take to you James ?
Not relative, but I ve been wondering for a long time why your avatar is Alain Delon :)
He was young .. Maybe "Le guépard" period ...

    Exacly, James D.

That's how/why this thread got started in the first place. But if you just joined in 2011 and hadn't been here for the full 420+ pages, opening it expecting to see ultra-high print quality work, I'd probably been disappointed too... :)

    I totally agree also.
Even a poor Photoshop or Gimp can give ideas.
We have the chance to do quite anything with cars with just a computer.
Cutting / welding takes more time :p
High quality can be done .
Design and ideas are more importants .

You're making the assumption a person is "new" Sinister when in may just be an ID change. Could be I've posted several in this thread that have been saved by others and cross posted in elsewhere. :)

  18. So that's who that is! Handsome devil, isn't he? I'd just assumed all along that it was a picture of JamesD.

Though it did seem a little unfair that he should be both so good looking and and have such Photoshop skills! :D

    I have a deal for designers ...
It s not really a simple Photoshop trick.
First, it s a long term project, so there s no hurry .
This is how I want to make my Buick 38 :

I ve been thinking for 3 years about this . And may start in Spring.

So for now I know what to do with the front .
Still don t know about the rear ...
I really like the Dodge 41 rear lights. Also the Renault Frégate or the Peugeot 403.

    Renault Fregate :

    403 Peugeot:

Please show anything nice, even the most crazy, I can cast aluminium, and build quite anything.
I like the Art Deco style ..
I m just so poor in design :p

    Thanks a lot.

Here s 2 stolen pix of the same car .

Nali- That Buick is super cool!

The tail lights on the Renault are awesome! The Peugeot lights remind me of the square back VW's.

Sinister , french brand have really been inspired by US models ...
Look at the Dodge 41 Coupé , they are quite the same as the Renault :p

The Peugeeot is the same a Peter Faulk in "Colombo" but 4 doors .

The Buick is for now a great piece of rust :p
This is just a Photoshop idea of what I want to build.

Sinister, thanks again for your time and talent.. the woodie has inspired me to put some time on it.

here is my 51 hardtop he did for me.. (hotrod inspired) simple clean up and a set of Real Rodder rims with a nice rake.. as much as I love the version with a set of Astro (I love the 60's lowrider look), I am a hotrod guy at heart. I guess final look will come down to available extra funds.. astros are cheaper and go better with my no HP 6 banger..

Thank you much, Boones, I appreciate the complement. Your projects were a ton of fun to do. Your cars inspired me, and my art inspired you... a win/win in my book!

    Nali,

Just to see, I tried the same image as you. It took me twice as long as you, so I won't be doing many of these. I did get the color closer, but it was trial and error, layers and blends. Of the attached one is flatter (not as in matte) and the other more metallic like the Mustang. I definitely like the non metallic color for this.

I think the problem is the original quite black color is really flat .. So it s quite difficult to have reflect like the Mustang.
Unless we can rebuild reflects .... too lazy for this, and not enough skills.
And if you ve played with this picture, you may have noticed it s not shinny on the door . I use Gimp, I still have the .xcf with 3 layers if you want to play with it :p
One original, one for the body and one for the wheels .

Yes .. It takes time ... That s why I only do this when I have nothing else to do, and if I like the car :p
I m not really sure ppl asking are aware how much time this take .
BTW. before this one, I ve just played with less than 10 pictures. It s quite easy when you take time to read tuto.
