It used to look like that, but not so good now, it made a nice target and has been knocked off 7 times since I put it up, farmers and snow plows mostly. Next time I'm just puttin a stocker on the stick.

  3. after someone smashed my flamed box I decided to build my own. 10 years and not a single dent
dug a 1/2 thick round well casing out of my scrap pile. cut it in half with a sawsall. also had 8x8 1/4 square tube cut the top off with the same saw. welded the two together added a 1/4 inch steel plate for the back. had a piece of .125 polished stainless for the door gate hinges with 1/4 pop rivets. used the latch off the old box
1/4 inch 2x2 angle iron welded to the box and a piece of 1/4 inch steel plate (same scrap pile) for the legs had some 1/4 wall 2x4 retangle tube that goes about 36 inches into the ground.
painted with some left over paint total cost Zero.
I live in a rural area and all my mail goes to a po box. but I do have my address on the street and unless it get run over by a semi it will probably hold up for awhile

I'll be back with a photo of my mailbox post. The driveshaft out of a 1923 Model T that got rear ended. Welded to a 19" Model A wheel with a bag of cement to hold it in place for the last 34 years.

I like it! I had worked with a guy who moved way out east on the Island and they had to have mail boxes at the curb. After he lost a few to fireworks and having them smashed up, we made him one in our shop.

It looked like a legit approved US mailbox, much like yours. The outside was rolled from 3/16" stainless steel sheet, the end, bottom and door were also stainless and everything stationary was welded. We used some stainless hinge stock on the door which was riveted in place. Even the adapter tube for the post was stainless tubing. Our paint shop primed and painted it, stenciled his name and house number the side, a work of art.

The post was cemented into the ground and the box bolted to it with aircraft quality bolts. The whole deal must have cost the company $1500 in time and material.

One day he comes out of his house and next to the mail box on the ground was a splintered baseball bat. We wondered if someone was walking around with a broken wrist as well.

I painted this one and gave it to a car club in Bishop for their raffle.... They instead put it on a table for a "silent auction".... Easily the worst way to generate money for the club. The previous year I gave them two Walmart flip lid waste cans that I pinstriped. They put them on their raffle table and the ticket jars were stuffed by the end of the day....

Had I sold the mailbox to a customer it would've cost about 850.00. The car club "sold" it for 140.00:eek::eek:

I have another about half finished that will go out front of my house:)

Black and white checkerboard with candy blue. Flames, then striped with clear over everything, then sanded and polished.

Thesea pics are after colorsanding it but before polishing.

Here's mine for the shop. It's a Mexican Coca-Cola truck that I never restored because it was missing the rear doors.:D

I've had my house broken into before. As much as I'd like to have a rodded mailbox, I don't want to advertise that I'm a rodder and have my shop broken into.

My mother-in-law had my Italia hand painted on a box in Mexico about 15 years ago. I've never installed it. She still says I'm her favorite son-in-law. The rest have all gotten divorced.

  26. I'm afraid to put this out by the street for fear of it getting stolen! I got it many years ago from a scrap yard in 18 pieces and put it back together with a tig welder. I saw one recently on the tv show "American Restoration". If I remember correctly, Rick charged the owner $600 to blast and paint it. I've probably got around $50 and some "elbow grease" in mine!
