fabrication of helix out of tubing, how do you do it?

    Are you going to need a mirror image to create a set of impellers? That will be hard to do free hand.

    OK in my pretend garage, I came up with a bench-top 3 Axis tubing bender.
    When you turn the big hand wheel, tubing in chuck will rotate and travel towards tooling at end.
    The "armstrong" handle will shape the tubing as it feeds.
    The tooling at end could be 1-7/8 cut down trailer balls. Use a cable through the balls.
    This would make a "Cork-screw" shaped tube. Lay 4 corkscrews together and you have Ed Roth header pipes. I think.

    Anybody want to go in halfzies with me for one of these? Actually, it may be more like 1/10,000-zies that I can afford. And I don't actually know what I'd do with it... but it just looks like something I need! :eek:

    It really is amazing. At about the minute fifty mark, they make a helical bend. With a shallow, helical bend, the OP could easily have this done. Certainly a job this bender can handle without batting an eye.

    Right tool for the right job;) Sump'n to be said fer it:D

    Holy ****! That's WILD! I'd have SO much wasted tubing material laying around if i had that from playing!

    In actuality, you'd probably have next to none wasted!

    With my JD2 bender, I use the BendTech software coupled with a Tube Bandit DRO and never waste tubing other than what I factor in as "cutoff".

    I imagine this machine would eliminate even the cutoff given it has no follower die.

    I hope your thinking of using 1" EMT (thinwall) and not rigid, lol, Sir. To do it on a bender would take alot of precision spaced marks and repeated precise angular bends as you roll the pipe through to accomplish what you're trying to end up with. I've never seen a 2" pipe hickey for EMT, since we have Greenlee power benders at work, Rod.

    Well here's the sand bent ones. 1" emt for practice and experiment, should be 1/2 scale.
    Twisted all 4 together with heat. Got about 45* and the tubing ripped itself apart at the end plates. As strange as it sounds the ends want to flair out and that's what ripped them from the welds.

    Then here's some I did in my roll bender. Guessing at a 12 foot radius one way and then rotated the bent pipe 90* in the roller and ran it thru again. If you don't count the first or last 6" of the pipe I almost got 90* out of this. The lumber is just to hold things while I twisted the tubes to fit.

    Oh no, i'm not saying the machine would waste it, i'm saying i would because i'd be making a lot of bent tubing i'd have no use for just because i could! :D

    I was doing some thinking and am not sure your idea about"***embling" 4 helical bends is even possible!

    Reason I say this is, scale everything down with 4 copper wires like you want. Then, try taking them apart. I don't think it is possible. ***embling them would be even more difficult. I just don't think it can be done in individual pieces like an ***embly.

    Your sand bent EMT conduit test seems to me to be the only possible way for you to achieve the results you are after........UNLESS we're talking less than a foot.

  24. Well, here's my next move, I have some flexible greenfield conduit that's about 17/8 od. I'm going to rig that up and fill them with some expanding foam. Then ill see what happens.

    Leave it to me to want the impossible. Seems very doable just a bit beyond my grasp.
    When its said and done it really isn't that much twist 120* in 36" and when cut in half its 60 in 18.

    That should absolutely be doable then especially with only 120* helix it should be quite easy to achieve that!

    I don't think this is out of the realm of impossible at all with this new information you provided!;)

    BTW, I totally dig those boat headers!!!!!!! I can see a set on my ride. Too bad they point the wrong way or they would be ready to go!:D
     
  26. Maybe I should go back to 180* ? You know, so its harder to do, my little sister should be able do 120* lol

    If if you fixed the flanges on the boat headers so they fit a car, when you flip them over the cool part is on the bottom.

    Here's an interesting thing to concider.
    At any point relative to itself the tubes measure equal, yet relative to the ends they measure larger until the pipes complete 90* then the same as the ends. There is a 1/2 square bar thru the center of this.

    I couldn't get this straight at all until i blocked up the ends off the table.

    Looks like Holmes on Homes got carried away with the spray foam while insulating that tubing... :D

    So is this still the experimental stage or are you building your helical shaped exhaust headers yet? ;):D

  29. Until I figure out how to do it, its all experiments I think.
    That's the plan, I'm trying, maybe ill make it happen before i give up. Not!

    I'll be starting a thread on hemi exhaust ports and headers with some interesting observations and general overthinking. Should be fun .
