When I see rails from this time frame, long and sleek, before the rear engines came along, I always remember seeing a couple of them on an episode of American Bandstand. I was about 8 years old and I remember Dick Clark checking them out and talking to a guy about them and then later the kids were dancing around them.

Sorry to get off topic but this kinda stuff went deep and thats why I love it so much today.:) Thanks for all the pictures and the info about them.

I think Rick Stewart drvoe the American Banstand fueler. Another rail might have been John Gheudal (again spl) Art Linkletter House Party car. I saw it at the 68 Hollywood Lane Parade on TV. Perhaps these were the cars you saw.

Nice story on the Freight Train in the new issue of Hot Rod Deluxe.
Even John Peters says he has trouble remembering all the shoes.
    List besides "Floyd" includes Bob Brissette,Craig Breedlove,M/T,Leonard Harris,Bill Alexander,Goob Tuller,Tom McEwen,Sam Davis,Billy Scott,Walt Rhodes,Gerry Glenn,Bob Noice.
    Wow,what a lineup.
A companion story is about Bob Muravez and his Floyd Lippencott name as driver.I am old enough to have seen and read all about that deal back then.Bob used the name to keep his dad from disowning him for driving a race car.Thats common knowledge, but was surprised to read that when his pop found out, inevitable,he not only disowned him but never talked to Bob right up till he died.
Now to me,thats a little sad.

Thanks for the info WCD. I didn't know about Rick Stewart driving the Bandstand Fueler but that was most likely one of the cars on the show and the fact I was just a kid maybe there was only one rail on the show.

Interesting note, I recently talked to Don Hampton and he told me that his Bandstand Corvette was just a sponsorship deal and he never did meet or appear with Dick Clark or have anything to do with the show.

Add Kenny Safford to the long list of "Train" drivers, he drove the old version -- light blue, heavy tube frame...still remember him sitting on the roll bar at San Gabriel waiting for a track clean-up after the car before him blew up...

  10. And, of course, the mailman is still reading my copy. Haven't got it yet.

Ran into a native son who now lives in Tenn over the holidays. He ran Trophy Speed Shop here in town and lettered cars.We have been exchanging scrapbook pics.Got some neat ones. Thanks Jim.

Gonna start with ones not in motion but these are too cool to not put on the coolest thread.Jim crewed on some good drag cars and did some traveling. Here are some pics from Daytona in 1963.

This is from South Glens Falls Dragway
    This was 1965
Charlie Bowen in the Chevelle who would run dragsters and funny cars later on.Jim would crew with him
Don't know the vette but a neat shot because of the flagman and the converted trailer in background that was the concession.
The 55 was Paul Guenther who worked in the local Chevy dealership.
Ran a hydro.I bought this car from Paul after the garage it was in burned.
Was a little too much for a 16 year old so i resold it.Wrong move again.

This rail was destroyed minutes later when the driver ran it through the lights when he was told not to by the owner.South Glens Falls did not have a generous shut down.Jim tells me the owner fired him on the spot.Apparantly he survived.

Known for his US Mule cars
Held the A/MSP record for awhile and won some good meets.

  27. Don't start with me Finch! Look at a picture of Gary in his roadster and you'll see his distinctive helmet.

Little story on the Dodge Chargers.
I remember walking home from school which took me by the local Dodge dealer.Out front were the 2 Dodge Chargers,
I did not even know they were in town and was too young to have made my first trip to the dragstrip.
I remember crawling all over those suckers and talking to (I think)Jimmy Nix and Jim Johnson.Got some handouts and now can't find them.
That was one of my defining moments of getting hooked on drag racing.
I remember going home and begging my dad to take me to the strip that night.I didn't even know where it was.
That went over like a fart in church. He saw racing as stupid and a waste of money.I pouted for days.
So I was excited to get this photo from Jim Putnam.Pretty cool shot up on the hauler.
