Well ... it took me almost two years, but I finally found the original (2¼" x 2¼" color transparencies that my father shot at the 1958 event. He must have been busy prepping the Coupe ... because he only took eight pics ... ... three of which I've already posted:
... and the other five pics are of Drag Cars (still on their trailers): NO. 210 ENTRY Transfusion DRIVER Jiggs Shamblin CITY Akron, Ohio CAR dragster ENGINE '53 Chrysler
NO. 236 ENTRY The Gold Digger DRIVER Johnny Burell CITY Birmingham, Alabama CAR '39 Fiat ENGINE '57 Chrysler
NO. 231 ENTRY Drifters Auto Club DRIVER Hozie Gomez CITY Redondo Beach, California CAR '35 Ford ENGINE '54 Dodge
NO. 347 ENTRY Paul Grimmett DRIVER Paul Grimmett CITY Phoenix, Arizona CAR '39 Simca ENGINE '51 Cadillac
Wow! Amazing photos. HEMI32-Your fathers coupe is up there with my favorites! It's beautifully leveled and balanced and the HEMI just tops it off! Beautiful car........ HC.
Those color images are awesome!!! Just the right stuff to get me thinking about my '32 Drag coupe I want to build. Can I ask you where your father placed the '58 National stickers on his car? One looks like it's placed on a window and the other might be interior?
Yep ... one is on the passenger-side rear quarter window ... and the other is on the passenger-side of the upholstered header panel. They've held up well for being on there for 51+ years ... but we've always been very careful to clean around them (and not get any chemicals on them).
WOW this thread has been going on for a couple of years and is really killer. The car has such a rich history and was so well done. Can't believe this is the first I've seen of it... Thanks for sharing and hopefully there will be someone in the family to pass the coupe down to and that they will keep all in tact too. Well Done
@ChassisResearchKid ... Thanks for the info! (I've updated that post accordingly) ... the power of the HAMB never ceases to amaze me!
I just revisited this thread because of a post on another and noticed that Rancheros must have been the preferred tow vehicle in 1958. One of the Drifters' car was towed by a 57 Ranchero. I love this photo of "The Moose" and wonder how many more people took pictures of it when we were there .....
Here's some cool 8mm film footage shot at The 1958 NHRA Nationals: NOTE: These 2 YouTube videos were originally posted by Jay (@Jive-Bomber) Ward in his TJJ Blogs: HAMB Exclusive: Vintage Drag Racing 8mm film! (Part 1) Vintage Drag Racing 8mm film part II.
Thanks for sharing Hemi 32!!---Knew your dad (Bruce) when he & Good guys were putting on Western NSRA Nats on West Coast. I had some original 8mm from 1955 drags in OK city, but I gave film to Greg Sharp when he was at NHRA Museum in Pomona about 10 years ago.----Don
