An old man family friend gave this hood ornament to me because he said he had heard that "rat rods" like to use em. Well call me a rat rodder then because I think its awsome! It screws on the original gas tank filler on my 28 tudor. It appears to be pot metal and is spider cracked in several places. Does anyone restore these? It looks as if one big pot hole would shatter it. Is it doomed to the fireplace mantle? He said he though it was a 1910 Essex. What do you guys think?
Yes, it is an ESSEX cap but 1928 is closer to the year it came from. I think I have one around here because it fits on a 28-29 Ford. Bob
i don't know if it is essex, but would cost a fortune to restore l'm sure.how about encapsulating it in a clear epoxy to keep it together?like a 1/16 inch or so.they even have some mettallic dyes that could be used .
That's amazing ! if it can't be restored i might take it off your hands. I'd be happy to put that on a shelf in my living room, would be a fantastic piece of history.
It is a 1928 Essex radiator cap. The Hudson cap in the same year was the same figure but larger. Essex cars were first built late 1918 so the 1910 thing is just a senior moment - I know - I have them too! They are also available reproduction in stainless steel and quite expensive - or at least the Hudson one is for certain - same thread.
dude, youve gotta start using a space bar and the enter (return) key!! cool piece though! ('28 Essex)
