This stuff looks fantastic! Have you run the parts yet? I'm curious if it has changes any since its been heat cycled? Cracked, flattened out, anything? If not then that stuff just rocks.
I have, but only on under chassis stuff that just naturally gets slimy and dull real quick. I'm really wanting to see how well it holds out on the framerails I posted on the first page. Knowing the history of the product, I expect it to last a good long time.
Krylon 1613 is not gone. And it doesn't have to cost what that ebay seller wanted. Granted its more difficult to find, because they moved it to another line. Therefore it is carried in as many places. Just do a search, you'll find it somewhere close to you.
Not a fan. It does not seem to have good UV resistance. I have had it fail inside of 1-year, over proper prep, on an actual John Deere.
This is an actual reply from Krylon concerning the formula change that they have made to all of their spray paints: .... Due to Federal VOC restrictions on solvent based paints, we were forced to change the formula from a lacquer to an alkyd. Lacquers can be recoated anytime, whereas alkyds need to be recoated within one hour or after 24 hours. Once the alkyd resin starts curing, if a new coat is applied over it, wrinkling will likely occur. The old version is still available through our "Industrial" distribution as such products are not as regulated as "Consumer" paints are - which is our line. However, it will not have the new spray nozzle etc. You can find these products at such suppliers as Grainger or Fastenal. The best "semi gloss black" spray paint that I have ever found, is Plasti Kote #361. It covers good and dries quickly, and has the correct sheen for restoration work on pulleys, brackets, etc. Give it a try if you can find some. If you like Chevrolet Orange, Plasti Kote engine enamel has the best gloss out of all the brands, and is supposed to be closest to the factory formula. I have also found the Krylon 2X in colors to be good paint. I think that the 2x simply means that it has more solids (color) in the paint so it covers more area with fewer coats. Seems to be good stuff! As far as primer is concerned...I like to use Aviation Zinc Chromate primer on all bear aluminum and steel as it has the best bite / retention. You can buy it from most aircraft suppliers online like Aircraft Spruce.
Anyone else finding more defective nozzles these days? Seems that for every good can, I get 2 or 3 that wont spray right, or they leak all over.
I love Krylon 1613 and still have at least 6 cans left. I have painted parts with it for over 40 years and been pleased with it. I recently repainted a dash after 35 years of service. Only repainted it becouse I wanted to change a few things. Redid it with 1613 and it should last another 40 or so.
check ouit this web site www.preval.com. I use this gun system for dupont centari for painting dashboards, old coke coolers, license plates, etc., I have even shot epoxy primer thru it. You can find them at Home Depot, Ace Hardware and they are cheap 3-$4 dollars for a new bomb. The container is made of glass and will last indefinately. good luck.
This thread's a bit like asking who's hotter-Betty or Veronica? Ginger or MaryAnn? But, since you asked: for me: Krylon, Betty and MaryAnn.
I know this is a old thread but I was wondering on the Rustoleum Appliance Epoxy enamel in a can could you use some sort of "clear" over it ? The reason would put a decal on the painted surface. Anyone know what "clear" to use in a can would definitely be appreciated....
I found Seymore brand thru a friend. They offer a clear and it works great over their semi and flat black.
All my past projects have worn Duplicolor Semi gloss black in some way. Brackets, axles, frames even. Held up extremly well on my rockrawler axles and frame and looked good for years with basic cleaning, and was easy to blend repairs. Used Krylon Hammertones on a lot of brackets, links, steering. It seemed to have the same characteristics. My current project has both on the rolling chassis.
Just a reminder: Always turn the can upside down and spray til paint clears to clean tip. That's my way of thanking the old fart that taught me that years ago.
Right now, I'm using Duplicolor. I'm happy with it. I clean the metal, prime and coat. BUT.... you have to follow the recoat instructions. I let it cure for a week and then do the final coat.
Back to my question....anyone know of a "clear" in a can that would be compatible with the Rustoleum Appliance Epoxy enamel or the Duplicolor?......reason being to put the "clear" over some decals....thanks..
You didn't say water base decals or stick on. I've have stick on type "lift" a little on the edges due to the solvents in the paint.
The best clear I have ever found is U-POL Clear #1 UV Resistant in an orange and silver can. I found it at an automotive paint store in Fountain Valley Ca. It's $25 a can. I've used it over many brands including Krylon and Rustoleum on stuff for my wife's garden which is outside 24/7 and after years the garden art still looks new. The air cleaner in the photo has this clear on it.
Rustoleum makes a laquer clear in their auto paint line and a 2X clear, which I assume is compatible with the 2X enamels. Do you wanna run a test, shoot a test panel of some sort with your left over appliance epoxy, and try the 2X clear. Its $4 to find out.
Krylon semi flat, I buy it by the case. But for a more durable paint try the Eastwood 2k stuff. It has a paint hardener in the can, once punched and shaken the can has a short life, maybe an hour or two. It has a red cap you take out of the lid, place it on a stem protruding from the bottom of the can, slam it on your bench and shake. I have painted sub-frames with it and it looks good years later. Not many color choices but they have flat, hot rod and semi flat black that look really good. Wear a respirator, it is hardened enamel.
For a tough semi-gloss black, check out PJ1 Frame Epoxy (PJ1 is a motorcycle chemical company, co check with you r local bike shop). The stuff sprays well with the fan tip and goes on over bare metal...instructions say so!
I just painted my model A with "Rustoleom 2X" spray cans and while the bodywork sucks, the paint went on very smooth and with a great gloss to it.. Will definitely be my spray can of choice from now on.... ** clic pic for larger image**
