I knew it was a joke, but this history major just couldn't resist a history lesson anyway. (I am a teacher after all)

 

In WWI, my great grandparents had to quit speaking German in public, even though they were born and raised in the U. S. A. It was my great-great grandparents who emigrated from Germany, long before WWI.

 

If you want to see that Drug Store today, open Google Maps, go to Dorrance, KS, find the corner of Railroad St. and Main St., then hit "Street View." If you head on up Main, both churches are still there, too. It's been 100 years --- not bad.

 

Not sure of the year, probably the early 70's, but I post this as I'm headed there for my 40th class reunion this week-end. For those who aren't from the Tulsa area, this is Oral Roberts University. (Political post: Thankfully, it is our first reunion with Richard Roberts GONE).

 

The scene hasn't changed much on the west side of Tulsa. There are still many refineries and storage facilities there.

 

The Philtower Building was important in the Boy Scout history. When Waite Phillips gave Philmont Scout Ranch to the Scouts in the 40's, he included this building to help support the Ranch. It was only sold in the 1990's and the monies invested for the future of Philmont.

 

Boston Avenue United Methodist Church still stands and has services today. It is a beautiful site downtown.

 

The Villa Philmonte, Waite Phillips' headquarters at his ranch near Cimarron, New Mexico. It is now belongs to the Boy Scouts as a training center at Philmont Scout Ranch. I had the priviledge of working here during my college summers, and as a newly wed with my wife right after graduation.

Wikipedia, (not always the best source, but educational nevertheless), says he was drafted into a Penal Unit in 1944, and declared MIA-presumed killed.

 

One more, it's an impossibility in real life, you'd be 500 feet in the air in this area, but this is Norman Rockwell's painting of the Tooth of Time, a landmark at Philmont. I've climbed it (from the back) more than once. I have a picture of my wife on top of it in 1972. She doesn't like heights, and looks rather nervous.

Fascinating! but I think you'll find the drugstore is on the corner of Railroad and Lincoln wth the churches on the left up Lincoln.
You guys make me smile when you think a building still stands after a 100 years. I think most of our buildings in the UK are over 100 years and many considerably older.

This takes me back a numbers of years to an old gasser. 390 built to 427 specs, rock crusher 4 spd and 4:11s. Body work never got completely done because some guy wanted to buy it so bad he gave me a sweet 64 Skylark in trade. It was ok because every time I took the 49 out, I got a load of tickets. Ah,to be young again.

 

Hey!...I have an Idea.... If we got a place on Rt 66, and did this with a bunch of old Cadillacs.....
