The DogFightMagazine side of me loves the Hemi Pantera.

The HAMB side of me doesn't like the reproduction hardtop gasser though.

All in all, I wasn't surprised they picked the SBC to be number one. I do have to say I'm somewhat surprised that some motors were more popular than the others. But who am I to say HRM is wrong? They are the all-knowing Hot Rod Magazine after all..:p

Maybe Hot Rod Deluxe should do their own top 10 engines (pre-'65 or whatever their cut off year is.. '63?). Now that'll be a better article.

  13. That's kinda the feeling I had when I saw the article, I mean they have listed about every engine ever produced, well that's Hot Rod for you. It would have been better to just say small block chevy or flathead or hemi but not list all the sizes, because I don't think anyone considers a Chevy 307 as a hot rod engine. Just sayin.

That is why I don't buy magazines. They have no clue about the past and what was great, and what was popular.

Maybe if they looked in their attic, they could find some 50's issues to check their facts.

Being that it is a reader survey , it should be " The 20 Most Popular Engines " .
Everyone has their favorite , who is to say what one is best ?

  28. It seems that Speedfreek155 is the only one here that read the byline that says "Don't Blame us! The readers voted!"
The list is not by the editors, but by the readers.
The best and largest picture in the story is the Scot blown flatty with Navarro heads and a Vertex magneto from a Ron Main Bonneville car. Seems to me they tried to highlight the flatty.

End of the article has how Hot Rod would rank them in a number of catagories.
    Historic Significance Rankings
    1. 32 to 53 Ford Flathead
    2. 55 to 03 Chev Small Block
    3. 51 to 58 Chrysler Hemi
    4. 64 to 71 Chrysler Hemi
    5. 58 to 76 Ford FE
In my opinion Hot Rod has some bad cars and some cool cars.
I like cool cars and the mag is a great value.

  29. I have to agree with you missed the mark !

No Studeybaker stuff either. How could the powerplant that set the production car speed record in 62 at 175 mph not be on the list.
