im getting ready to paint my 46 ford coupe soon, and would like to go with a satin black finish (not to flat, or to shiny... just enough of each). i've looked into hot rod flatz, and the "sem" line of matte black, and my question is can you clear over either product? i dont want to be re-doing it in a year like primer. anyone out there have any experience with a clear coated satin/matte finish? thanx
maybe could do a long search here for lots of info already posted on this subject. also post a pic of your ride for inspiration. have fun.
pickup looks great hotrodprimer, is that a single stage? this is my car, only thing different fromthis picture is it sets lower in the rear now, and has a tubular grille http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=31787&pictureid=363584 http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=31787&pictureid=363585
Thanks guys,, I'm sold on this product,,it has given me great service,,holds up well and it won't break the bank. HRP HOT ROD BLACK Satin Finish Urethane Topcoat UA-70388 An activated two-component single-stage topcoat, Kirkers Hot Rod Black is far more durable than flat black primers, spray bombs or cheap implement paints from the local hardware store. UA-70388 is a true urethane topcoat, which means it has exceptional long-term durability and the fade resistance needed for restoration work. Provides excellent protection against UV, chemicals and everyday use. New-and-improved formula provides even greater consistency, with superb resistance to scratching, scuffing and marring. Hot Rod Black has the flexibility to be used in any number of applications, for accent or overall work on street rods, choppers, old school g***ers, muscle cars and sport tuners. Can also be used on interior parts, ch***is and under-hood components. Take a look at 32coupedeville on here. I painted his 32 5 window with base coat clear coat. Used PPG flex n flat clear and mixed it 4:1:1. Has a great "sheen" to it. It has been painted about four years. Here is a link to his album. He has a lot more pictures on his photobucket account. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/album.php?albumid=4370
When you say you don't want to be repainting it a year I would suspect that is because you fear the color will fade out from the sun. Primers, like DP90 will because they have no UV inhibitors in them, whereas satin paints usually do have the inhibitors so they are fine in the sun and should age just like any other color. We have been using SEM Hot Rod Black and are very pleased with it. We took our cars to a show Saturday and person after person kept coming up and asking what brand it was because they were looking for the same sheen and wanted it for their own car. But I am sure there are lots of other brands out there that are not dull but not shiny, like you want. Don
thats the finish im looking for josh, but i've heard horror stories about the flex-n-flat clear.... have you or the customer had any problems with smudges or finger prints, or any problems when it comes to washing? attn: HRP, can the kirker product be cleared over? i would like to have a clear for protection purposes, this car will litterly be driven daily when finished
thanks DHR, that is what i'm afraid of, and i know it can happen with just a single stage as well, i've just always been familiar with base coat clear coat paints.... but by the sounds of it, i can get away with a single stage, make it last, and get the desired sheen. thats why im here looking for advice, thanks guys
HRP, does Kirker do any other semi gloss colors? I checked there site but all their color charts say "coming soon" I want to do a temporary semi gloss finish in a dark navy blue on my car until I have all the rest of the work done. Paint comes after chrome, and chrome work is friggin expensive.
This is the exact color I want for now, but don't necessarily want to do a clear coat. ( i have alot of block sanding to do yet, but am sick of bare primer) Just for ****s and giggles... do you recall what the name of that base coat color is?
Back in 1973 when I first built th 48 I accidentally ended up with a satin finish when I painted it 72 Monte Carlo Placer Gold lacquer and didn't put on the clear coat. A lot of the satin finish cars that aren't flat freaking black have the same appearance that it did.
What about GM Reconditioning paint? It's satin black and used for ch***is. It holds up well, looks good, is easy to spray and is cheap.
I have also used the SEM Hot Rod Black kit. Looks really nice. Has a great sheen to it. I can't give much insight on how well it holds up though. It hasn't been on the road very long.
I used the SEM Hot Rod Black on mine (OT '69 Mustang) and the paint looks killer. Car get lots of good comments (except for the "purist" guys, but who cares about them). The SEM is a urethane, so sun fade will not be an issue. It sprays easily and is a single stage product. I shot my car in pieces in the home shop/garage... I'd post a pic, but would get blasted for an OT car more than likely....LMAO. Tom
I used the hot rod flatz a while back for a friend. so far it doesn't have the need to redo look. it's a single stage urathene paint with flattener mixed in. the bigger concern I've heard expressed is rubbing on it too much polishing it. I really liked this product FWIW.
We did under the hood on my sons Mustang with PPG black base coat and PPG flat and flex clear for bumpers, been several years looks like the day we shot it and is durable. I think I would look into the Kirker single stage, single stage holds up better over time.
Talking about satin black not flat black, there is a difference, and maybe the people that ***** are on prozac now.
I read the subject ***le and it sounds so much more pleasing than the flat black. You know older more experienced.
No, we are still here, we've just been beaten into submission. A little like King Canute trying to turn back the tide. Paul
the suede finish is what im looking for. primer is for sanding, not a final finish, and is starting to get overated. seems like every guy with a nova or a jap car has it primed black. they dont have a clue why, but boy are they cool with thier rattle can flat black. i definatly understand the low/no budget approach at building a car but "flat black" just isnt for me. i want something with a little more cl***. thanks for all the advise guys.
