Ken Crain is the owner of Studio 217 in Dallas Texas. He is an up and coming metal shaper and has a true love for metal art. He was recently bitten by the metal shaping bug and has been fascinated with the Baileigh MH-19 Multi Hammer. After a couple of phone conversations with the Baileigh crew, Ken decided to jump on a plane and fly into Milwaukee Airport in the middle of a blizzard, all for the love of metal shaping!

I'm new to the type of awesome work like you guys do. In the past my forming has been done with a welding glove filled with sand. It kinda looks like a second day road kill but it works.





Replaced both corners, the rear panel and the deck lid.

I'm about to attempt a body for a Model A speedster. I bought a set of anvils from HF, I know poor quality, but I made my own frame and have polished the wheels and it seems to be working.

My question is: I've seen the top wheel with a rubber band on it. Why? Is it the rubber band you find on some gas cylinders or is there another source for them?

Could one of you guys with a power hammer or other power shaping machine and some time to do a small project PM or Email me?

I need some 20 ga steel bent up into a shape that I cannot make except by hand with a cocking tool (and that is taking too damned long).

If you have the time and would like some paying work, hit me up, I need a few pieces done, probably using the exact same type of die as shown in post #532 and quoted in #701.

The rubber band is a tire inner tube.

 

Model A tires fit a 6'' wheel but it does not work that well for me. All you are trying to do is form the metal over the anvil. With a inter tube you can only form the thickness of that rubber as far as i can see. That is if you can keep it on your upper wheel. I tried it and didn't like it so I spent some and made this simple roll attachment.



This takes place of my upper wheel. I use the heck out of this a lot of time just to get the initial shape, best example need a roll pan, find the correct radius anvil, roll it through this simple roll attachment and then with you Lancaster's shrink the edge to fit your car.

It is one of my most used tools anytime i want to form (does not change the surface area) something this is what I use.

Also it works best with true radius anvils, if used with contact flats they will show in your panel. Not a huge deal they are pretty minor and easy to remove.

Nice job on the bodies above!. I have been shaping metal for about thirty years. I replaced every visible part of the skin of the '33 body below except the yellow bit and the rear screen surround...



A big project like that obviously takes a lot of work and some machines but it is possible to make most things with just hand tools. especially patch panels....



One of the most important things in repairing parts is welding the sections together in such a way that least possible distortion is caused...



Here are a few parts shaped using nothing more than a few hand tools...






This bumper was made totally by hand





It does not take a huge investment in machines and tools to get involved in metalshaping, most things can be done by hand including stretching and shrinking flanges beads and compound curves. Amazing work on here! I wish i had the tools and skill some of you guys have. I made this with a hammer, bag, two chisels clamped in the vise for a tucking tool and an old chicago planishing hammer.
