Love these great old photos of the Lockheed Burbank facility.
The camo was designed by Walt Disney, they even painted out the runways and some planes got soo confused they landed on nearby San Fernando Road.
When Lockheed got the approval to build the Boeing B-17 at Burbank, Bill Boeing came down to look at the plant, loved the camo and copied it at his plant in Seattle.

.....Thanks everybody for the over whelming amount of pm's and replies in appreciation for the magazine covers,
clearly a lot of people relieved the days of waiting for the newest issue to hit their hands (in spite of their big brothers)...

It seems I was in the same boat as many of you in that the mag would be tattered by the time I got to read it, but that didn't make it any less valuable.

Always been amazed by those pics, what brilliant cammo work!!
Interestingly the large 4 engined aircraft in the second last pic with all those P-38s may just be the very first Lockheed Constellation. Possibly the best sounding civil aircraft of all time.

In April 1942, New York City began placing hydraulic fill over the marshy tidelands of Idlewild Golf Course. Initial plans were for a modest 1,000-acre airport, but by the time construction was complete Idlewild Airport had grown to five times that size. Commercial flights began in July 1948. On December 24, 1963, the airport was rededicated John F. Kennedy International Airport in memory of the nation’s 35th president. Today, JFK is the nation’s leading international gateway, with more than 80 airlines operating from its gates.
