Vintage shots from days gone by!

Does anybody know the purpose of the pipe coming out of the radiator, left side, pointing front?

I noticed in the some of the earlier motel shots theres a corvair at damn near every one!! Freeway shots too!!

Somebody's going to have to explain the theory behind the roller in the snow. I don't understand.

 

well in winter it was better to pack the snow in the streets and use sleds. you just put ice/snow shoes on the horses and travel was easy. For those not familiar with horses I'm talking about steel shoes that had studs to dig in good and solid on ice or snow. Rolling the streets was one of the jobs both my grandfathers did here In N.E. Ct. Some of these rollers were made to be pushed by the teams rather than pulled.2 or 3 feet of snow would compact down to about 1 1/2 inches of compacted snow/ice rather than being heaped up on top of the roadsides.Back then 8 or 10 feet of snow was not uncommon we had picture of town with snow higher than first floor doors and windows!

I think there are more rooms in this hotel than people in Howard. 2000 population was 779.

 

Sedan, Kansas doesn't look much different than this today.

 

Nothing of Udall, Kansas is left as it was. It was blown away by a tornado in 1955.


Growing up in Wichita, this was the first "non-family" memory I have is of the tornado. We set on the porch and watched the storm go by to the south of us.

 

Doubt it is the Andy Griffith Show. They were heavily sponsored by Ford & Ford would not let a GM product on screen. Even when Aunt Bea bought a used car in was a 55 or 56 Ford.

For those who think Kansas is flat, I offer the above scene from the construction of the Electric Railway in Winfield.

 

I would ask for just one thing. Where are these places that are pictured? I wish people would, when possible, identify the town and/or state in which the pictures are taken.
