I believe that movie was Hollywood Knights. I remember that '56 Delivery. Lot's of good movies came out in the mid-'70s. American Graffiti, The Sting, Dirty Mary and Crazy Larry, and Martin Sheen in California Kid come to mind. There was another with a white early '70s Challenger or Cuda in it that has been remade and really is not the same movie at all.

I think the original may of been called White Lightning but not positive. I remember saying that those early '70s Cuda and Challengers were going to be collectible some day. Look what happened. Everything wasn't about money in those days. You didn't consistently hear the phrase "Whats It Worth" in those days like you do now.

The first NSRA Street Rod Nationals I got to go to was St. Paul in 1974. Lot's of primered cars were running around with stickers that read "It's Neater In A Beater"

  4. I didn't open the link but I didn't have to...I lived it. Drove everything from a string of 55-57 Pontiacs and chevys to 64 'vette, 68 GTO, etc etc..great times...'til the gas crunch hit when I was driving my 68 Goat. The gas lines in Portland were murder! Only could buy gas every 2 days and I ran a big fat Holley spread bore.

Ah, an era I actually remember from first hand experience...
With the current popularity of gassers, I'd say a lot of HAMBers are only a year or two away from long shackles, hijackers, and a set of deep-dish chrome slot wheels with N-50 Mickey Thompsons. (Were those the tires everyone wanted back then? I can't remember that well 'cause I never had a set. Maybe Pro-Tracs?)

You made me look it up. :) The name of the made for TV movie was Outrage. I think the jacked up yellow 56 was a Nomad without a front bumper (maybe??).

Mickeys or McCrearys were the hot tip. Pro-Tracs were as hard as supermans kneecap.

Traditional 70's?? Not a car, but I built this a few years ago. Tried to keep it as "70's" as I possibly could.

  12. Jeff...loved that car! I yanked the stock 347/3 speed "selecta-shift" and replaced it with a 10.5 to one '59, 389, muncie 4 speed with hurst linkage. and 3.63 gears [if I remember my numbers] Spanked a few 64-65 GTOs with it and a buncha 55 chevys

Yep, had chrome shackles and high jackers

Super stockers at the local drag strip ran white rims on the rear, so my falcon had to have that look.

Yup. Out on the end of Ballard beside Shilshole marina. "Golden Gardens" park had 2 huge parking lots. At sundown everybody would move from the "Keyhole" lot, into the bigger lot with street lights. The beach was behind us, and the starting line to the 1/2 mile straightaway was in front. I saw some wicked race cars, and some hairy close calls. It all came to an end around '76 when dozens of cops every night would close it down by writing HUNDREDS of tickets for any slight offense. It never recovered.

  23. Wow! What memories.. Seem to me I was doing the same thing then as I'm doing now.
The car were higher, the tires wider, and the hair was longer, other than that about the same.

^^I remember Liesens Automotive had a mint white one with a 429SCJ with drag pak factory 4.30s, and a toploader for sale in about '76 for around $1600. I know its mis-used on here alot, but bad-ass really applies here.

One of the few reasons I'd go back in time to the 70's would be for this reason. All those bad ass muscle cars collecting dust on dealers back lots during and after the gas shortage. All that big cube and specialty muscle was really cheap for a few years. One neighbor in my hood had a 69 1/2 440 six pack road runner and another a GT350 rag top Shelby. Both guys bought 'em in the mid 70's.

The gas crunch kicked a lot of muscle cars to the used car lots. At sweet prices. I remember seeing an ad for a '69 Camaro with a SB for $900 at A.J. Foyt Chevrolet here in Houston around '77. I had $800 and begged my dad for the $100. It was a no go. I didn't sleep for the whole summer.

A friend in highschool had a 440 Roadrunner. The dealers were giving muscle cars away. My highschool parking lot could have been an ad for Barrett Jackson.

  28. It could have been Bishop Park in Wyandotte. Motor State Street Rods and Windsor Area Street Rods held their "Can-Am" car show there a time or two back then. I don't recall any shows at Elizabeth Park back then but with all the cars that hung out there he may have thought it was a show.

  29. My black 57 on pg 10 was preceded by my yellow hdtp. which unfortunately, ran afoul with an elm tree and a ladies porch.
