A wide U would solve a lot of problems. Time for a mock up.

  3. okay
a wire mesh -stainless grill below the exhaust kinda permanent with a brass frame the hood side just notched to go around each end matching on the other side that would be attached to hood side

using a sturdy enuf mesh a segaarave name could be embossed into it -relief or recessed

  4. I've always admired fire place screen for the mesh they use to make them. Nice and tight and some already look or are brass.

Looking good. Drum roll time's a coming.

Good point on the semi-perm part. Since the exhaust tubes angle back some, opening/closing the hood over them may not work. But if the hood is metal with a U cut out, and the mesh part stays with the exhaust tube area, that problem is avoided. Also gives heat break between exhaust & hood.

    Pattern

I started to make a pattern. This isn't what the hood side will look like. I just wanted an accurate representation of where the exhaust came through. It looks like the right size hole will be about 4.5 inches in diameter on the ends connected by straight lines. I like all those links to mesh. Nice stuff! I'm thinking brass even though mesh will be a pain to clean. Or maybe copper because it'll be easy to form the the pipe "surrounds" out of copper.

    Jerry,

Just make sure you make the mesh area big enough, so we can see the engine, especially the manifold.

  9. the surround of the pipes may work better as a two part piece a bottom and top seamed down the center ... the hood side just meeting these pieces along the top.. the pipe cover would go from rad to cowl.. so the hood side would be 3 parts two around the exhaust and the 3rd above it..... the plumbing dept may help in finding a surrounds for pipe i have seen a a collar that opens for drain pipes where the pipe is non removeable .. availible in brass

or just flare out a 5-6 inch lip over the pipes with the mesh in the flare seagrave lasercut logo mounted on the mesh

thinking of all your hard work while i do not help much

  10. Jerry,

I like the mockup- very Mercedes SSK-ish! Just a thought on the sides; too much mesh can give a "chicken coop" look to the car. I'd rather have little hints as to what's underneath that massive hood, than have it all exposed (increases the wow factor).

Hoping to get some time to run up and visit- the progress is fantastic!!!

That one was a Diamond T truck to start with. I've seen it a couple of times and it's an interesting piece.

When you look at it in person it appears that the builder used a lot of the original truck including using the front fenders as rear fenders.

Yonahhr I like the way yours is going, that is going to be something special when you get it all together. I'm sure glad I won't be the one buying the gas for it though.

    Mockup/pattern

I worked on the pattern today. One problem is the pipes have a slight down hill slant because the engine slants. This makes trouble when you try and align the opening with the hinge line. Also the pipe's height is a little uneven. Basically I'll have to take averages and make the best guess. I experimented with a few looks then settled on one. See what you think.

No one is ever going to see that little angle. It's like agonizing over a custom motorcycle part when the bike is on the lift and you are 2 feet away from it. The bike spends its life on the ground, on an angle on the jiffy stand. IOW don't worry about it.

Hey, this post makes me an even 2400.

I love this look. Is the mesh & area below it going to be permanently mounted? If not, I can't see how you would make this work.

Looks real good, now just match it on the other side so we can read the intake. Don't worry about the slant, Duesenberg pipes do the same thing.

  19. square ends are traditional too
after some review divide this whole side down the center of the pipes/mesh decorated area all the way to each end of the hood side

I was wondering how you might (visually) seal the exhaust pipes around the mesh & I saw this in the plumbing dept. today. Available in many sizes. If you go with bronze or brass or copper mesh you could make your own.

Nice art work! I'm considering all options put forward by the design team and commend everyone's effort. There will be a company picnic on April 1st and I expect everyone there. :)

  26. even after more thought :)
since the screen will be mounted behind the hood surface any kind of shape could be cut in the sheet metal surround . round , fleur di lee ?
diamond or seagrave its self in block lettere ... like the duesy yellow racer of jeb's..
ovals lightning bolt , big arrow , maybe funnel shaped screens around each pipe ....????

    Project note

I ran out of sheet metal last week, but today I drove to Gainesville and picked up 2 sheets of 4X10 20 gauge. Enough for the hood sides and fenders. We're back in business. Pictures soon.

    Ask and you shall receive

It took me a couple of hours to clean off the metal working area. I had to re weld the table. Then I struggled with getting the metal up on the table. So there it is. Tomorrow I remeasure, then possible cut.
