Oddly enough, this is something I actually know a little about. I studied it when doing a Disaster Management course.
On April 16th 1947 the (French) Ex-Liberty ship 'SS Grandchamp' was docked in the Port of Texas. Reputedly sometime during the morning a small fire broke out on board, by mid morning the fire had grown and detonated over 2000 tons of Ammonium Nitrate Fertiliser.
This resulted in detonating a warehouse next to the ship that stored the Ammonium Nitrate to detonate as well. These initial explosions were so powerful that the shock wave broke windows as far away as Huston City 40 miles from the site!!
A third ship the SS Benjamin R, Curtiss detonated later in the day, 1,800 tons of Ammonium Nitrate was aboard. This explosion launched one of the ships propellers more than a Mile inland!!
It is believed that over 580 people were killed including the entire Texas City Fire Department.

    Doc.

  14. I wonder if that's a hot smoke balloon preparing to launch on the left side of the picture?

I don't think it's the twist. This was in Medicine Lodge, Kansas at a Festival there. Believe me, although this is a traditional dance, I'll bet they could twist too. Another picture says that the guy in the dark costume is Wilbur Shawnee, a world champion dancer.

  19. My mom worked at the Sears credit department here in Kansas City when the Texas City disaster happened. The day after the explosion, her supervisor walked in and told her to locate all customers in the area and to zero out their debt. She said, "those people don't need to worry about paying their Sears bill after something like that." Corporate conscience back in the day.

WOW only the second picture I have seen here. My dad bought one new in 63 and we would get up early on Sunday mornings pack 3 kids and 2 adults in it and drive 550 miles round trip to see my Grandparents in one day returning late in the evening listening to the Detroit Tigers and Ernie Harwell on the radio. I wish I could find one.

Nearly 2 million Corvairs were made between 1960 and '69. By the mid '60s, you would see Corvairs on the road as often as we see Mustangs today.
