Cool thread, minus all the cheezy street rods, all these cars are amazing. I envy your merc JB, I personally think its one of the best lookin, most perfect mercs on the PLANET right now I cant wait till I can build a pre-war, 1940s styled custom.... ahhh it was the most perfect era for custom building, none of those JC whitney gimmicks, just pure, smooth, class. These early customs are like a good woman, curvy, smooth, classy, not too much make-up, with naturally beautiful lines. I CANT GET ENOUGH EARLY CUSTOM CARS!!
Well since I was told that the Ayala Brothers weren't brought up while I was gone I figured it would be rude not bring them up. Here is Gils merc that I am in love with !!! I know not everyone likes this 40 but to me it is one of my favorites or probably my favorite. It just has such smooth graceful slippery lines.I really think this mercury looks great from all angles...especially with the fade-aways going into them cad rear sections.Cars like this is what gets me going and the fact that it was raced more then it was shown makes it even more special to me.With a full reworked Evens powered flathead...im sure this car just flatout hauled ass on the street. He ran 129mph at the lakebed in a custom, that is very impressive to me.Long live the mayor of Olympic Blvd.
Kent..I love your merc..one of the best for sure! And my friend Jeff..good to have you back. we where worried about you! dont be afraid your alone liking that Ayala merc...mmm!!..I have some 48 caddy wings..even a Evans powered flatty!! so all I need is a 40 merc! ...i'll be back in a moment!! -Palle
Thanks, Palle! As you know, my next project will have a Cadillac flathead. But it's not a -40 Merc, though. Didn't you have that black -40 convertible? Here is one of my favorite -40 Merc pics of all time. Ayala rocks!
Enough already!..Please close this thread!..How in the Hell, am I ever supposed to find one of these for sale on the cheap, with this kind of exposure? Ah..never mind, keep posting the pics, I can't quit looking in spite of myself. Great pics, of one of my all time favorite body styles.
This is what I mean, 3 Ayala posts in a row ! God Damn, it's great to have JeffSled back !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's amazing that these cars look so good chopped because in my opinion the stock roof line of an un chopped one is one of the ugliest of all time. (coupe)
J.B., I wish I could have suckered you into trading me for that '40 Merc. That along with Sledge's are some of my favorite recent cars. The Hoffman/Rodriquez Merc is once that really shook me up as well last year. This thing shows some real vision... Side note: those of you have chopped 39-40 Merc and have families how do your kids like the back? Does it provide good views for them if you were taking long car rides or is it like a submarine? I know the hardtop option has to help with that some. I wish I could afford a convert (or traded for J.B's) because I think it would have been a great marriage of a car big enough to fit my family and parts that I'm familiar with.
A great shot of two of the earliest chopped 39-40 Mercurys around.I am a fan of the early style chop on these cars even though I know they look better when the rear section of the roof has been pulled back,I just like the early style of the way these were chopped.
I agree 100% this merc is at the top of my list.I cant stress the word stance enough.I just think the stance on this car just makes everything flow better. These cars were meant to sit like this.
Nothing worse than a car with the "forgot to put in the springs" look. When I cut the coils out of the front of mine I cut a TINY bit too much, now I am forcing myself to get new springs and try again.. I need PERFECT STANCE
Here's a nice -39. Don't know who owned it. Jeffrey. I could not let go of the Merc. Sorry, man. The other car you helped me check out was supposed to go out two days ago from N.Y. The Merc works great for the kids BTW.

[/QUOTE] I was hoping you'd say it doesn't work great for kids because then I could let go of my deep burning desire to have one...damn it! I'm glad you didn't let go of the Merc. That's all you bud! Excited to see what comes of this mysterious car heading across the pond. I thought it was beautiful and is going to work out great for ya!! I will tell you that guy also had some really nice Edmunds heads and intake that would work on that engine.....shhhh don't tell anyone else.
The stance is what so many miss out on when building a classic kustom. Lowered is correct, but without the stance, it's all ruined. This is not a thread about the style, so it should fit better in my thread of 1948-52 New Old Style Kustoms. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=540032 Just a quick look at this, then we can get back on track. The classic speed boat stance is what first comes to mind, when looking for the right style. Low in rear, high in front. Johnny Zaro and Al Andrils 1940 Mercs
J.B. Those pics of them Chris-Crafts just ruined me,my mind will be stuck on those all day now. Those pics have to get posted on the 48-52 thread.
