  4. Cool image...for those who don't know, this is Parliament Hill in Ottawa, Ontario. I had the pleasure of standing right over there for Canada Day, 2010.

The point was that the flywheel lightening from NOTGETTINGRICH, the reverse running engine and slurry port job was all part of the reasons Hudsons were fast in the early years, not Fords, Chevys, Olds, or Camaros.I wasn't trying to debate whether Smokey was the only guy with an imagination. If you don't get, it's OK.

On those days NASCAR was cheater's paradise. There was one guy who had an extra gas tank hidden behind the dash, the Sunoco Camaro that got it's vinyl roof because it got acid-dipped way too much to the point of getting holes on the roof and so on. To paraphrase Mary Hopkin: those were the days my friend...

at least that pic wasn't yet another duplicate of something that was posted only a few days or weeks ago like many of the other repeats here lately.
makes me wonder if the people that post even bother to look at the recent posts before they post up all the duplicates;)

The story about the hidden fuel tank (which I don't doubt) made me chuckle, because I have a long-time NASCAR friend who swears up and down that Richard Petty's crew used at least part of the negative space in the roll cage for enough extra fuel to stretch it out in a close finish. He said THAT is why Richard bailed out so fast after a crackup. True or baloney, I haven't a clue.

Carl Keikhaefer got tired just of being ACCUSED of cheating, decided it wasn't good publicity for his company and vacated NASCAR. Other guys, of course, just took (and take) an occasional fine or suspension in stride -- sort of like a cost of doing business in a sport where victory can be measured in fractions of a second.

I guess we'll never totally sort out facts from myths. It's all part of the entertaining grist that keep guys talking -- and arguing -- decades after the sport's pioneers retired, or even passed on, right? It's all good!
