Must have been a Santa Anna wind when this was taken, you could never normally see the mountains from the Harbor Freeway, the smog was just too bad, even then....

You are correct, it's the Darrin 1941 Packard Clipper Convertible. It was the only one built.

Supposedly, this car was specially built for Actor Errol Flynn.

    Hi nukeGM,

You are somewhat correct, the photo's origin is tumblr but it was reposted to a site in Europe and that is where I got it from.

And yes, I always look at everything that was posted all the way back to my last post, mostly because I enjoy seeing all the history but also because I forget what my last post was and I don't want to repeat it..

Darn right, and it WAS for Errol Flynn. Unfortunately WWII came along, or Packard MAY have produced something like this in greater numbers!

As it was, TWO more tribue cars were built (independently) circa early '50s.

    You got that right......

And ol' Smokey wasn't beyond blowing smoke himself (to keep everybody off their game). And he'd just sit back with the straightest face of all of them while laughing inside.

Looking north on Chicago's Lake Shore Drive somewhere between Diversey and Belmont. The thing that looks like a RR track in the lane divider is a pop-up median. For the morning rush hour, the barrier would rise into place and the southbound traffic would get 6 of the 8 lanes inbound toward downtown. In the afternoon, the barrier on the southbound side would come up and northbound traffic from downtown would get the majority of the road. This was used up til the early/mid 1970s when they switched over to orange traffic cones to divide it up twice a day. By the 80s that practice was ended on Lake Shore Drive. However, daily lane switches continued on Sheridan Rd and Ridge Blvd, the northside arterial streets that feed Lake Shore Dr thru the late 90s.

Smokey was one of his own....a student of the legendary Red Vogt, master of the flathead, mechanic of some of the earliest GA stock cars, mechanic of first Nascar winner, and first two championships for Raymond Parks' team, and won several Indy 500's. Anyway, I don't know if any of ya'll have ever read Smokey's book. I haven't read it, but I've been listening to parts of it on audio. It's great, he was really smart and powerful. It's great to listen to, but he never was cautious with words....in other words, don't have a woman near while you're listening to it!! lol

And that was just done so that the
inspectors would find it and stop
looking and then miss all the other
    *really* "trick" things!!!! :D:D

I know it's not and that these pics are
from the U.S. and were taken "back in
    the day
".....but I just got back from
Cuba - and other than the absence of a
    few mid-'80's Ladas, Moskovitches and
Volgas thrown into the mix, I could
*almost* swear that these two pics
were taken just last week, somewhere
    on the Central Highway, between
Havana and Matanzas! I kid you
    not!!!:eek::D

  30. What is the car third up on the far right (in front of the 59 chevy)? Wierd roofline... Convertible? El Camino? Station wagon with the back of its roof missing?
