    Hey guys,

I ended up going on a last minute trip out east for work and instead of meeting the guy I'm buying a 58 wagon from in Detroit this weekend I flew into Pittsburgh and am driving it back home tomorrow.

My question pertains to ***ling the car. In PA you need to have the ***le notarized. This is not a requirment in WI last time I checked. But if it's the law of the state selling it, would it apply to ***ling it in WI? Meaning would I need the PA ***le to be notorzied in order to ***le it in WI? I tried calling the DMV on Friday and sat on hold until the registration office closed. I didn't have a chance to call them today due to meetings and traveling.

My other dilemma is do I get a temporary tag or just drive it home with my insurance card and bill of sale?

Keep your fingers crossed for me tomorrow. I'll be driving it 600 miles home.

    Thanks,

    Scott

you won't need a notarized signature to re-***le the car in WI.

You can't get a temp. tag from WI unless you own the car already. Then you will need the ***le in hand.

Can you retain the seller's plates for the trip? Not having plates on the car will attract unwanted attention from Johnny Law.

Best wishes for a great trip.

Please post up some photos when you can

I don't know for certain about WI but here in Pa, you'd have to have it notarized if there's a spot on the ***le for it. Conversely, if it does not, you wouldn't need to.
Why can't you get it notarized?

I would just drive the car with insurance and a bill of sale and not worry about it.

In past experience, the laws of the State into which the vehicle is being ***led apply, not those of the State from which it departed. That said, many States have different notions about this stuff and sometimes even within the same State, depending on whom you are talking to.

As for the 'plates'...have you inquired about a "Driveaway Permit, Tag, Sticker, whatever they call them in PA? Most States have some provision for a Temporary Permit for just these sorts of cir***stances. Usually they cost from $5 to maybe $15....which is obviously a bargain compared to a ticket'

Hope you have and safe and fun trip.

It does make a difference in NY NJ CT no notarized ***le No go I am not sure about NJ and CT but NY dosent even give you a ***le for gars before 1974 just a transferable registration. I would get it notarized when you pick it up there are places everywhere in PA any car/motorcycle/trailer/boat dealer can do it

Bobwop's got it, you don't need the notorization. The key when you ***le it in Wisconsin is to just walk the ***le through the DMV office with the signatures in the right place and KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT about any kind of PA notorization laws or any of that jazz. WI DMV doesn't know their *** from a hole in the ground, they won't know about the PA requirements, but if you start asking questions about ***ling an old car, it'll send up red flags. Just walk it through with confidence, the same way you'd ***le a $500 winter beater.

And if you're planning on getting collector plates, do a ***le-transfer only at the DMV office first, then mail in for the collector plates, as opposed to doing them both at the same time. That way, when they lose your ***le in the mail, you'll be able to get a replacement in your name. If you tell them you want collector plates, they'll want you to mail it all in at once. Don't do that. You should be fine.

Also, there's no such thing as a Wisconsin temp plate because Wisconsin DMV is stupid.

I was suggesting that he inquire about a PA temp plate, since that is where the trip is originating.

I bought many cars in Pa. You go to a notary there in Pa. and they issue the temp tag good for 30 days. They will notirize the ***le, also have the seller there with you to complete the paperwork. The insurance is covered by your daily driver. Bring the ins card for your daily driver with you you will be 100% for the ride home. Good luck!

there actually ARE temp. plate in WI. We issue them every week. We provide one for in-State customers that don't have a plate to transfer. They are good for 90 days. For out-of-State customers, they get a 30 day plate.

Yep, done this myself a couple times. They will issue a temp tag using the insurance ID card from your daily driver... Or using insurance ID on the new car.

Get it notarized. Plus there's Notaries all over PA that will issue a temp like skids said.

I always have, and why tempt fate? Better to have your paperwork more "right" than ya need it to be vs standing at the DMV in Wisconsin and being up ****'s creek without a paddle.

I'll confirm it too - bring your insurance card & your info along to PA . Got to a notary with the seller & they can issue you a temp tag , so you don't have to worry . Should something happen to the car on the way home , without the proper paperwork & such , you could be SOL !

That makes sense, if that's a do-able thing, then I'd do that.

Problem is, you can only get those when you order plates that they don't have behind the counter. I'm talking about a plate that's good for a week or 30 days or whatever that doesn't require you buy plates for a year or more. Other states have that, and it'd be nice if Wisconsin did too.

Thanks guys. I think I'll get it notarized and get the temp tag. I actually have an insurance card for the car itself. I gave all the information to my ins. company last week. You know how that goes, if I don't do it then I'll get pulled over but if I do get it then nothing will happen. I'll post pictures of the trip this weekend in a new thread.

  16. 1973 up are ***le cars. NY doesn't notarize their ***les, I'd be surprised if they cared about it on a PA ***le especially on an old car. But it probably varies with the DMV you use and the clerk you get.

It would probably be a good thing to have the PA ***le notarized simply because you will be driving the car through PA on the way home. Going an extra step trumps being pulled over in PA and having a ***le in your possession that isn't notarized.

Do a walk around the car before you hit the road and make sure all of the lights are working before you leave. No need to ask why I mentioned that.
