we talked about these products when i took my street rod cl*** here.
they look pretty cool i really would like to give them a try but some of them are pretty pricy.
would love to see a product deminstration by the company.

 

That could be just the thing for my 65 Barracuda gauge cluster, radio bezel and A/C box.
Anyone used the stuff or seen it first hand?

 

if you check on the web site they have a lot of demos of the product, looks like it works pretty well

 

I watched the videos on the site, but pictures and video can hide the truth. Much like a 20 ft paint job. $115 is a little high for me to drop on a hunch.

 

I dunno, it seems to be just what the working man needs. If it works that is.

To put things in perspective, Imagine if you will, re-chroming a '53 Desoto grill. The average quote i received was $95-$110 a piece plus shipping both ways(this price did not include any fixing of the parts if needed). Now multiply that by eleven.

Bumpers? $500-$550 a piece plus shipping both ways...

If I can hear some positive feedback from a HAMBer who actually used it then IM SOLD.

 

My '55 F100 looked terrible with its black front bumper. (all I had...)

I considered a can of the alsa for $39.00 plus postage, and the extras needed...

Lo and behold! Craigslist had a chrome front bumper for '53-'56 F100 for FORTY BUCKS!
When I got there, the bumper had a slight twist at one end, and a ding on its face.
The guy felt bad, so he threw in the last piece he had, a N.O.S. drivers door latch ***embly!
I felt bad, so I gave him $50.00 for both.
Got home, 5 minutes on my press and the bumper was straight!
The polishing with 0000 steel wool took a little over 2 hours, then I waxed it with carnuba wax.
I think I just got lucky. Drivers door closes with one finger, rattles are gone. Bumper shines like obama's heel.

HELLFISH 65, there is a place we used to send model car plastic to get chromed.
(Hales corners, or something like) He'll do interior plastic for full size cars too.

Has anyone here used this chrome in a can?

 

From what I know about these spray on chromes is the $115 is really just for the mystery chrome coat. The basecoat is just a gloss black and the clear is just like any other rattlecan clear. I wonder if you can just buy the chrome coat?

 

I think I'll give it a try when it's $4.95 at Walmart.

 

ditto on that. can't afford to re-chrome the bumpers, but $115 for a do-it-yourself sounds really tempting.

 

The chrome was like $35 by itself.

 

I've sprayed house of kolors chrome (not a spray can) and it took a lot of practice to look right and it looked like a weard polished aluminum. I don't know how you could improve that out of a spray can. Anythings possible but as a painter it just doesn't make sence.

 

I plan to give it a try on some 64 Polara tail light bezels. I sent one off to see if I liked the results and I was impressed. Mind you this was not the killer cans but a more profesional set up. However, he sold his chrome paint business and the new guy is as high as a chromer. The only thing I didn't like was the clearcoat had orange peal. If I can find the pic on my home PC I'll post it. The process is they build a miror in reverse. In building a mirror they spray gl*** with the reflective coating then with a backer. In chrome painting, the backer goes on first, followed be the reflective coating, then clearcoat for gl***. It's worth trying when I get time.

 

I bought some of Innate Chrome paint(not in can) and the protective clear that comes with it..I will be giving it a try..

the issue with chrome paint of any kind its the clear coating... let say you have mastered the prep and how to apply the chrome paint, you take a good look and you say..Wow.. but as soon as you lay the clear coat it turns into a polished aluminum look..

I´m not new to chrome paint..

here is how its done...

first you need to start with a black base, this needs to mirror like on its gloss..


the spray the chrome paint in faint coats(high pressure, very little paint(allowing about 5 minute between coats)

let the chrome painted surface dray over night

(I used a no name rattle can chrome paint here, no Innate/HOK or Alsa, good results can be had if your prep is flawless)



now time to clear the chrome painted piece(I used water base clear coat as any other clear that I had tried it drestroyed the chrome effect)

 

Wow nice job on parts in the pictures. All about prep in the end isnt it.

I think the idea of doing trim, bezels and such is probably a good idea.

I want to try something like this for my next project, frame brackets and such which will be under the car. Like the rear end for example. I can get a 8.8 rear pumpkin cover in chrome, but may try this on the rest of the housing.

Its like the home chrome kits, you can, you just need to know how to do it. I wanted and estimate on getting my 32 firewall chrome painted, it was $600 for one of the pro shops that do that process. I would rather pay another $400 for real chrome in this instance.

that bezel looks pretty good , gives a guy bad ideas , wonder how it will hold up to time and washes

 

as long as the clear coat used was a good 2K one, it will hold as a good paint job... and when it gets small scratches all you do is re coat it with clear(if the scratches are not deep enough to hurt the silvered parts)

So are these "Killer Cans" a one shot one kill type of thing? Whats the shelf life on these after you push the ****on on the bottom of the can? The ****on releases hardener right?

 

Exactly. I'm pretty sure the Alsa killer cans clear can be purchased in a special 2K can. But, you have to use it because it can't be shelved for later once it's activated. My bezel looks nice but the clear had enough orange peal that you could tell it had been cleared. I'm betting the cans would go on smoother.

 

I worked for an idiot that wanted to paint the company Formula 3 cars and a two seat Lola sports racer 2000 to look like McLaren F1 cars and spent $5000 for Alsa materials
We used two very good body shops and thousands in man hours polishing black and they looked like rattle can in fact the two seater looked great til the clear process
