A lot of historical significance with this aircraft. Douglas only ever made one DC-1, they made it for TWA as a trial aircraft. No one knew that it would be as successful as it was. Not only did it break the U.S. trans continental record in 1935, beating Military aircraft! It was also THE aircraft that mapped the way for creature comfort, before this passengers endured the full noise of flight through a thin aluminiun fuselage. It was also the first aircraft to have stewardesses, an on board kitchen and toilet facility's.
That one first prototype led to TWA ordering 25 more, these were slightly larger and known as the DC-2.

    Doc.

(You know thinking about it, who really cares? I wonder if anyone will read this??)

And if you look at the tail number X223Y, it was registered as an experimental aircraft at the time this picture was taken.

Not only is this Plane and Building Incredible, But they're also extremely historic. Howard Hughes started Hughes Aircraft there about the same time that this DC-1 was being prototyped. Hughes would go on to own TWA and make it a World Carrier.

There's so many 6 degrees of separation in this post. When saving the Broiler, we included GCAT=Grand Central Air Terminal in our booklet and on our tour. Disney bought the development I believe in the late 80's,
The last plane flew out of there in 1959. It was also L.A.'s Premiere Airport, that later went to LAX.

It retains 2 of its original hangars originally used by FOKKER and it now used by Disney's Imagineering dept and has a Autopia track where they test out the cars.

Dreamworks is at So.West end of the original airport and KABC-TV is there as well=Also Disney. Google it for more history:cool:.

I really appreciate the historic commentary. Sometimes it drives me nuts when there's no explanation with a picture. This whole thread is a great modern history lesson. My daughter is studying the Depression and WWII in middle school. I've been able to share some great photos.

I'm throwing in an old 40's Pittsburgh picture:
