Anyone have any pic's of the Rolling Bones cars running radials?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Fordor Ron, Feb 26, 2012.

  1. Not the Coker Cl***ic's or Excelsiors they run now, but the off the shelf Michelin or whatever radials that they were running for awhile.

I just wanted to see what they look like again and I can't find the photos I had of them on my computer.

I bought a set of 16" wheels, caps & rings for cheap and thought I would just run some off the shelf tires till I can spring for a set of the new Excelsior radials.

    Thanks in advance...

There were some pics on one of the Bones threads here but it would take a dedicated search to find them!
Didn't look too bad if I remember correctly. Tall and square looking....

  3. Yeah, that's what I want.

    I found a few...

The reason I'm looking is because I get 20% off and no tax on tires for my business. I can buy conventional radials cheap but the Coker Cl***ic's and Excelsiors are high dollar.

If I can find something that looks decent I can run those for a year or so and spend the money I save somewhere else on the car. Later on I can buy what I want but for now I just want to burn gas...

I think these are Michelin LTX's which I can buy cheap through Discount or NTB.

    Anymore pic's out there?

With the LTX suffix and by the look of them they are light truck radials which go on Jap utes and 4 wheel drives. Do they use the same ones on the front as you probably wouldn't get the same rubber rake as I doubt that they make any small ones in that category. Other thing is that being light truck tire on a light car they tend to ride very rough as they are 6 ply construction.

Probably no rougher than a light weight two wheel drive pickup with no load in the back Swifty. If a guy could shave the letters and little scabs off and smooth the sidewall a bit the tires on the black car wouldn't look too bad. There are some radials made for vintage sporty cars that aren't bad looking but I don't know about the prices.

The Tire Rack website http://www.tirerack.com/tires/index.jsp lets you poke around and see what different brands have available in different sizes. It looks like the tires with the most desirable tread pattern for a rod have the gaudiest sidewalls though.

I had a 96 Dakota 318 pickup. The tires I had and liked were no longer produced at the time they needed replacement, so I let the Sears guy talk me into some LT commercial truck tires. Those kidney busters rode like they were full of cement. Sears took them off and I went back to SUV-ish shoes. Beware of ultra stiff commercial sidewalls! Gary

I have magazine coverage going back over ten years with the Rolling Bones cars, I can't remeber ever seeing any of those cars running radials. Excelsiors yes, Firestone Champions, yes. Standard radials, no.

  9. They did for awhile. I had a folder of pic's somewhere but I can't find it.

    They actually looked pretty good.

I sent them a PM with a question and they got right back to me. They seem like very good people.

  14. Because I wanted to see what they looked like before I troubled them. From what I remember they looked ok and they ran them on several cars for awhile.

No point in asking though if I don't like the looks.

    I'll keep digging.

    Thanks guys...

If you're buying tires, just do it once. Spend the extra money for what you really want, as buying 8 tires is a hell of a lot more expensive than buying 4. I know the Cokers are spendy, but why buy something you already intend to replace?

I'm a big fan of radial tires. For the mileage and free rolling.
That said, I do run Firestone DC on my T roadster.

If I was gonna run radials, I would spend some time in a big parking lot looking at what's on newer cars and small pickups/suv's til I found something I liked.

However, on a light car with a working suspension, bias plys do ride and handle well. You need to keep a lot of air in them to keep the temps down in hot weather and high speeds. With a tall radial you can run lower air pressure and let the sidewall be your suspension without heating the tire.

Those traditional, vintage, white walls, firestone, corker, etc. really DON'T perform. That's why tires evolved. I admit, they do look cool, but they really don't grab, especially when using "traditional" vintage drums that lock in panic stops.

That is the tire/wheel combo I'm running on a '32 highboy sedan I'm building. I found Coker has a Firestone F560-155R15 radial with a very similar tread pattern for about 76.00 a piece, for the fronts.

  26. That purple roadster at the Roundup belongs to Frank and Andi Brown and is a historic car in New Mexico. It's called "The Mayflower" because so many girls "came across" in it. Frank runs radials on his cars because they're all drivers. Here's a few more shots....

But looking cool is sooooo much more important than having a good riding car!

Slightly kidding.... I run Firestone Champions on my daily driver 51 pontiac and I never once have wished I had radials due to driveability, and yes, my car had radials when i first bought it.

To the O.P... I would just drop one payment on the Excelsiors, rather than buying two sets of tires, which in the end will cost you way more. Save for just a bit longer and live on Top Ramen for a month or two! :D
